Sophomore Ally Barrett notches first double-double of season
STORRS, Conn.—In the final match of the 2018 regular season the UConn Huskies (15-16, 7-11 AAC) hosted the Temple Owls (8-22, 5-13 AAC) on Wednesday, Nov. 21 in Gampel Pavilion with a final of 3-1.
Riding a pair of three-and-out red-hot matches on Friday and Sunday, the Huskies looked to carry over that energy and efficiency into this match. The Owls fell in the opening set 25-18 but withstood the rallies, taking the final three sets 25-20, 25-21, and 27-25.
How it happened…
Set 1
- UConn opened the match with the first points on a beaming kill from freshman Caylee Parker.
- The Huskies mounted a 5-0 scoring run at 15-10 and never looked back from there.
- At a Temple timeout UConn led by four and came right out of the timeout nabbing points on a block assist from freshman Kennadie Jake-Turner and senior Emma Turner.
- In the final moments of the set Turner's sneaky but effective flip into Owl territory was accompanied by senior Iman McGary service ace with the final point coming from Parker.
Set 2
- Temple's quick adjustment in the following set made things a little challenging for UConn as the Owls got out ahead of the Huskies and ultimately took the set 25-20.
- UConn didn't go down without a fight mounting a late-set rally to close the gap 18-13 on a 3-0 scoring run at a Temple timeout.
Set 3
- A Husky slow start didn't keep them from rallying through and inch closer to the Owls.
- UConn caused a Temple timeout at the 20-19 mark, in favor of the Huskies, after battling their way back riding a 5-0 scoring run.
- Parker's kill would add one more to the Husky effort at 21 but that is where the Huskies would stay as the Owls end the rally at 25, closing with a 5-0 scoring run.
Set 4
- UConn dug their heels in, knowing the stakes of this set. The Huskies kept pushing even when the deficit seemed insurmountable to begin the set at 7-2.
- The tide began to turn for UConn as their defensive stance forced a pair of Temple attack errors, bringing the Huskies within striking distance of the Owls. And, at a Temple timeout UConn and closed the gap to three at 13-10.
- Parker, McGary, and two Temple attack errors tied up the set at 16 all.
- Jake-Turner squared the set away at 17 moments later with a strike onto the Owls' side of the court.
- Keeping UConn in the match was a Turner kill and service ace, Jake-Turner kill, a sweet-spot-finding kill from senior Kennedy Arundel, Parker kill, and a pair of kills from sophomore Ally Barrett put the deciding set at 25-25.
However, the match and season for the Huskies would come to a close moments later as Temple would go on to take the set 27-25. This hard-fought contest had a total of 21 ties and 10 lead changes.
Barrett would finish the match with her first double-double of the season with 13 kills and 13 digs, with those 13 kills being a season high as well. She also tacked on several assists, a pair of service aces, and a block assist. Parker joined her by posting her 14th double-double of the season with 21 kills (led both teams) and 17 digs.
This was a collective effort as UConn had all but one Husky nab a kill or more, three with double-digit kills—Parker, Barrett, McGary (10), four with double-digit digs—Turner (14), Barrett, Parker, and with senior Elizabeth Kline putting her season best dig performance on at28. Even in the blocks category, UConn spread the effort around with all but three Huskies concluding the match with at least one block or more. And, while it wasn't the outcome that UConn wanted, they put out a great effort and edged Temple out of all but one category—points (72), kills (62), aces (4), assists (56), and digs (83).
