Indoor and outdoor competitions released
STORRS, Conn.—The UConn women's track and field team led by Head Coach J.J. Clark announced their 2019 indoor as well as outdoor campaign. The indoor schedule has nine meets including the NCAA Indoor Championships whereas the outdoor schedule features seven meets before the Huskies move on to competing at the NCAA Preliminary Rounds and NCAA Outdoor Championships.
"I like the schedule," said Clark. He continued, "Everyone is coming along in all areas there are always hurdles to jump over with injuries and things of that nature during this time of year. Everyone is doing well and the team chemistry is starting to formulate to the level that I like."
UConn will open the indoor season at two very familiar meets—the Nittany Lion Invitational at State College, Pa. and Vanderbilt Invite in Nashville, Tenn. In place of the Dr. Sanders Invitational, the Huskies will take on teams at the Columbia Challenge in New York, N.Y. on Jan. 24-26.
The remainder of the schedule goes as such; Scarlet & White Invite—Feb. 2nd, Valentine Invite—Feb. 8-9, UW Husky Classic—Feb. 9-10, American Athletic Conference Track and Field Indoor Championships—Feb.23-24, Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships—Mar. 2-3, and will conclude at the NCAA Indoor Championships—Mar. 9-10.
The outdoor season schedule resembles that of a season ago, with the only difference being the scheduling of the retained meets and no Stanford Invite. UConn is slated to compete at the UCF Black & Gold Invite—Mar. 22-23, Florida Relays—Mar. 28-30, host as well as compete in the UConn Northeast Challenge—Apr. 13, Larry Ellis—Apr. 19-20, Penn Relays—Apr. 25-27, Brown Invitational—Apr. 28th, AAC Outdoor Championship—May 8-13 before taking on the NCAA Preliminaries and moving on to the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
After a successful women's cross country season, Clark carries over some of those student-athletes to the track and field 2019 squad. Some notables from the fall include Susan Aneno, Courtney Akerley, Brianna O'Brien, Mia Nahom, and more. Nahom is coming riding yet another successful cross country season after her second consecutive All-Conference selection and posting two top-10 performances as well as a top-20 finish in addition to her placing in the top-60 with a 55th at the NCAA Northeast Regional. When asked about these student-athletes Clark states, "The whole group will carry over into indoors with good strength."
Looking at the women's track and field team Clark gives #UConnNation some student-athletes to watch out for. "A lot of different areas have people to watch out for, especially in each event," said Clark. "Off the top of my head—Kat Surin has great talent, Divine Oladipo as well as Susan Aneno have set several marks, and the list goes on and on."
Clark said, "We obviously have our marks set on the Conference and NCAA meets but outside of those we are really looking forward to the meets in N.Y., Seattle—which I am only taking a select few to—and Boston." He continued, "We are really focusing on and gearing up for conference and national meets."
The Huskies will see their first action on Saturday, January 12 in a field of teams at the Nittany Lion Invitational.
