NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The UConn men's tennis team wrapped up their fall season over the weekend competing at the annual Connecticut State Championship tournament at Yale University. The Huskies claimed a pair of singles flight titles and advanced to the finals in a doubles flight to end their fall campaign on a high note.
"We had the best performances from the team this fall," stated head coach Reinaldo Valor. "I'm so excited for the guys; we increased our level of play each week this fall. It has been great to watch the confidence levels and results improve so drastically."
In singles play, seniors Jack McLister (Leesburg, Va.) and Justin Warren (Durham, N.C.) each won their respective flights. McLister went 3-0 in the "Marc Howard Draw" flight to finish his fall season with a title and nine singles wins.Â
McLister opened his run with a win over Yale's Nathan Brown, 7-6 and 6-3. He advanced to the final with a 6-0, 7-6 win over Sacred Heart's William Wibmer and then won the flight by beating Quinnipiac's Alester Magalit in three sets, 7-5, 4-6, 10-5.
Warren grabbed a pair of wins in the "Matt Quall Draw" beating Allan Magid of Fairfield, 6-3 and 7-5, and Sacred Heart's Christopher Sause in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 10-1 to earn a share of the flight title.
The Huskies really shined on the doubles courts this fall, evidence by their 40-29 combined team record (.580). Leading the way on the final weekend was the team of McLister and sophomore John Michael Holtmann (Coral Gables, Fla.) who won three matches to get to their flight final.
The duo opened by beating Sacred Heart, 8-4, then battled their way past Boston College's Max Palmer and Markus Nordby, 9-8. The two finished with an 8-5 win over Marist's Lars Schouten and John Oxner. McLister and Holtmann were 8-3 playing together this fall.
The team of Warren and junior Brady Flanagan (Overland Park, Kans.) won a pair of matches, beating SHU's William Wibmer and Kevin Chao, 8-4 and Yale's Nathan Brown and Camille Kama 8-4. The duo finished their fall season at 7-1 as a team.
"Collectively as a team we have turned a corner and I am so proud of the guys," commented Valor. "We still have plenty of work ahead to reach our goals in the spring but we have put ourselves in a place to achieve them."
