LOS ANGELES – Seniors Napheesa Collier and Katie Lou Samuelson and junior Crystal Dangerfield of the UConn women's basketball team were selected to the Wooden Award Women's Preseason Top 30 Watch List.
Connecticut is one of two programs with three or more players on the list. All three Huskies were selected preseason All-American Athletic Conference First Team.
Collier was named to the watch list for the Katrina McClain Power Forward of the Year Award. She was named an AP Third Team All-American in 2018.
Samuelson was tabbed to the Ann Meyers Drysdale Shooting Guard of the Year Award watch list. She was also named a preseason AP All-American and the American's preseason Player of the Year.
Dangerfield earned a spot on the Nancy Lieberman Point Guard of the Year Award watch list.
The players on the list are considered strong candidates for the 2019 John R. Wooden Award Women's Player of the Year presented by Wendy's. Players not chosen to the preseason list are still eligible for the Wooden Award midseason list, late season list, and the National Ballot. The National Ballot consists of 15 top players who have proven to their universities that they meet or exceed the qualifications of the Wooden Award. Voters will rank in order 10 of those 15 players when voting opens prior to the NCAA Tournament and will allow them to take into consideration performance during early round games. The Wooden Award All American Team will be announced the week of the "Elite Eight" round of the NCAA Tournament. The winner of the 2019 John R. Wooden Award will be presented by Wendy's during the ESPN College Basketball Awards on Friday, April 12, 2019.
The second-ranked Huskies begin the 2018-19 season Sunday against Ohio State in Gampel Pavilion at noon.
