BUFFALO, N.Y. – The UConn men's cross country team wrapped up their 2018 season on Friday afternoon, finishing 14th at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship in Buffalo, N.Y. The Huskies were led by their senior captain Patrick Begley (Suffield, Conn.) who earned All-Northeast honors for the second-straight year.
The Huskies were 14th overall in a field of 34 teams competing in this year's race held at the Audubon Golf Course. Syracuse took home the team title with 79 points with Iona on their heels in second with 88 points.
"Patrick did a great, great job," stated head coach Greg Roy. "He is going to be just outside national qualifying I think but we are very proud of what he accomplished this year. He came back so strong this season from injury and finished his career in style. A great competitor for us for four years."
Begley improved on his 21st place finish at last year's race, taking home 12th overall in a field of 241 runners. The senior clocked in with a time of 33:16.1 on the 10k course. The senior finishes the season by earning All-American Athletic Conference and All-Northeast Region honors for the second-straight year.
R-Sophomore Eric van der Els (Norwalk, Conn.) was the Huskies' next top-finisher, taking 68th with a time of 34:32.8. Senior Kyle Barber (Fayetteville, N.Y.) was just off his heels in 73rd overall, recording a time of 34:34.4. Sophomore Sean Parker (Bridgewater, Conn.) was 96th overall with a time of 35:06.7 and junior James Mas (Trumbull, Conn.) rounded out the UConn top-five in 137th overall with a time of 35:38.2.
"This season, we had some guys show they are really ready to compete at this level," said Roy. "And we will really miss our seniors. They were an experience, hard working group who contributed a ton to this program."
