BOSTON, Mass. – The UConn Huskies took a 2-1 lead into the third period Friday night at Matthews Arena but goals by Zach Solow and Brandon Hawkins lifted No. 15 ranked Northeastern to a 3-2 Hockey East come-back win. UConn sees their record even at 4-4-1 overall and falls to 2-3-1 in Hockey East with the loss.
UConn freshman Roman Kinal (Waterford, Mich.) scored his first collegiate goal and also collected an assist in the loss. Senior Max Kalter (Highland Park, Ill.) scored the Huskies other goal, giving UConn a 2-1 lead in the second period.
Northeastern, now 5-3-1 and 2-1-1 in Hockey East, scored twice on the power play in the win. Trailing 1-0 after the first period, Jeremy Davies tied the game up at 9:07 in the second, scoring his second on the year.
NU tied the game on a 5-on-3 chance at 11:17 in the third with Solow scoring his fourth of the season. Northeastern's Hawkins provided the game-winner late in the period, scoring at 18:46 to secure the come-back win.
The Huskies had four power play chances but came up empty on each. Junior goaltender Adam Huska (Zvolen, Slovakia) made 36 stops in taking the loss, including 17 in the third period. NU goaltender Cayden Primeau made 22 saves to earn the win.
1st Period:
With 3:40 left in the first period, Kinal netted his first goal as a Husky and the first by a UConn defenseman this season. Kinal teed-up from the left point off a pass from junior Benjamin Freeman (Falmouth, Maine), getting it through traffic and past Primeau allowing UConn to head into the second period with a 1-0 lead.
Just 20 seconds after UConn's goal, four penalties were dished out between the two teams. Northeastern's Biagio Lerario was sent to the box for two minutes on a roughing call while Austin Plevy was in for a facemask call, a five minute major. UConn's Jachym Kondelik (Budejovice, Czech Republic) was sent in for roughing and Karl El-Mir (Montreal, Quebec) for hitting after the whistle, both two minute majors, giving the Huskies a three minute power play following the release of Lerario.
2nd Period:
UConn started the period with 1:37 seconds left on the power play, immediately following the release, Ryan Wheeler (Lancaster, N.Y.) was sent to the box on an interference call. Northeastern's Lincoln Griffin was awarded a penalty shot after a hooking call on Miles Gendron (Shrewsbury, Mass.) but hit the post, leaving the Huskies up, 1-0.
Just 1:12 seconds later, Davies scored a power play goal, tying the game at one. Tyler Madden started with the puck, feeding it to Davies, Davies fed it to Zach Solow and with a quick pass back, Davies shot it from the center point, right over Huska.
UConn answered back at 17:19 with a Kalter goal inside the left post set up by freshman Rulsan Iskhakov (Moscow, Russia). Iskhakov flew down the right side, passing to Kalter who was in front.
3rd Period:
The Huskies entered the third period up 2-1 but allowed two Northeastern goals within the last ten minutes of play. At 11:17, NU's Solow took a pass from Davies and slipped one past Huska on the power play, tying the game at 2-2. Â With only 1:14 left in the game, Hawkins found the back of the net, giving them the lead.
UConn took a timeout with 1:07 left and used that opportunity to pull Huska out of the net but the Huskies couldn't find the neutralizing goal.
Up Next:
The Huskies will host Brown at the XL Center on Tuesday night. Puck drop is set for 7:05 pm.
