CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – UConn seniors Karl El-Mir (Montreal, Quebec) and Max Kalter (Highland Park, Ill.) each scored but the Huskies came-up short in a late comeback bid falling at Boston College, 3-2, Friday night in a Hockey East match-up.
The Eagles sweep the weekend series sending the Huskies to their seventh-straight loss and eighth-straight in Hockey East action. BC improves to 6-6-2 overall and 6-1-2 in league as the Huskies fall to 5-11-1 and 2-9-1 on the year.
UConn grabbed the early first period lead as El-Mir scored shorthanded at 6:14 in the first. The Eagles tied it on a David Cotton goal with 15.2 seconds left in the opening stanza and then took a 2-1 lead just 1:26 into the second period on goal from Jack McBain.
BC's Oliver Wahlstrom scored at 3:40 in the third to give the Eagles a 3-1 lead before the Huskies looked to mount a comeback. Kalter pulled UConn to within 3-2 with a power play goal at 7:18 of the final period and the Huskies got a final crack on the power play with seven to play to try and tie the game. UConn couldn't establish their offense and pulled goaltender Tomas Vomacka (Trutnov, Czech Republic) with just over a minute to go but again came up empty in a bid for the tying score.
Vomacka finished with 29 saves in taking the loss. BC junior goaltender Joseph Woll stopped 28 shots to earn his second win in the series.
1st period:
The Huskies started strong getting their fifth shorthanded goal of the season at 6:14 of the first period. Sophomore Brian Rigali (Libertyville, Ill.) carried the puck up the left wing and fired on net but saw his shot blocked. The puck redirected to an oncoming El-Mir in the slot who banged it home past Woll to end his shutout streak at 184 consecutive minutes. It was El-Mir's ninth on the season.
The Eagles ended the first period with a power play goal with just 15.2 second left. Julius Mattila found Cotton sitting in the slot who redirected the pass past Vomacka to knot the game up at 1-1 on his 11th of the season.
2nd period:
BC started the second much like they ended the first, getting on the scoreboard just 1:26 into the period. McBain created a turnover in the neutral zone and weaved his way through the UConn defense before whipping a shot that beat Vomacka five-hole for a 2-1 lead. It was McBain's second on the season.
3rd period:
BC struck early in the third period as well, pushing their lead to 3-1 at the 2:40 mark as Wahlstrom picked-up his fourth of the season. Sophomore Aapeli Rasanen chipped the puck deep into the UConn zone where Whalstrom picked it up and fired on Vomacka at the near right post, sneaking one just inside the post.
The Huskies got a power play at 7:06 and took advantage just 12 seconds in on Kalter's third of the season. Freshman Jachym Kondelik (Budejovice, Czech Republic) fed the puck to junior Wyatt Newpower (Hugo, Minn.) at the high point and he blasted on net. Kalter was camped in front and got a deflection past Woll to pull them within 3-2.
Up Next:
The Huskies will be off for final exams and the holidays and return to the ice on December 31st when they head to state rival Yale University for a New Year's Eve match-up.
