ATLANTA, Ga. - The UConn baseball team came away with a gutsy extra-inning victory against Georgia Tech, 9-7 in 10 innings, on Sunday at Russ Chandler Stadium.
The Huskies (2-1) regrouped after the Yellow Jackets scored six-unanswered runs to even the score 7-7 in the eighth. The Huskies mounted a two-out rally in the 10th inning with a Winkel single and Moriarty ground-rule double. Troy Stefanski gave the Huskies the lead, 9-7, with a chopper back up the middle that found its way into centerfield.
UConn jumped out to a 7-1 advantage in the opening frames. Isaac Feldstein tied the game at one, in the second inning, on a solo home run to left field, his second dinger of the season. An error on a dropped fly ball off the bat of Stefanski led to another run and opened the door for a John Toppa two-run homer.
The Huskies added to their 4-1 advantage with a three-run third inning. Freshman Christian Fedko registered an RBI single followed by an RBI double from Winkel, his first double of the year.
P.J. Poulin pitched 2.2 innings and registered the victory with a quick 1-2-3 10th inning. Poulin recorded six strikeouts in the effort, a career-high for the left-hander.
Chase Gardner made his first career start for the Huskies and logged 4.1 innings and three strikeouts. Jeff Kersten made his first career appearance and threw three innings without giving up an earned run.
Notes
Chris Winkel collected his second career three-hit effort.
John Toppa hit his second career home run, his first came on March 23, 2016 vs. CCSU.
The Huskies moved to 3-7 all-time against the Yellow Jackets.
The Huskies produced a winning opening weekend for the second consecutive year. It is the first time since 1999 and 2000 that the Huskies posted winning weekends in back-to-back years.
UConn recorded double-digit hit games in all three contests this weekend.
