Huskies Post Strong Performances at Miami Alumni Invite

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - The UConn men's track & field team competed in the Miami Hurricane Alumni Invitational winning four events and posting several season-best results on the weekend.
"This was a very solid meet for us and we showed a lot of progress," stated head coach Greg Roy. "Our seniors really showed competitive leadership, winning three events themselves."
"A great triple for Trent (Beram) winning the 400, anchoring the relay from behind and putting together a good performances in the 200," commented Roy. "(Craig) Hunter's pole vault win was under tough conditions while Seth Zuidema had his second best throw ever. Ivan Nyemeck broke a sophomore slump with his win while r-freshman Jordan Torney scored well for his first decathlon ever."
The Huskies dominated the javelin claiming three of the top-five spots. Senior Seth Zuidema (Midland Park, N.J.) won the event with a throw of 67.68 meters (222'00"), his best distance this spring vaulting him up to sixth in the American Athletic Conference outdoor rankings. Classmate Kevin Foster (Groton, Conn.) was second at 60.06 meters (197'0") and r-junior Joshua Lockhart (Somerset, N.J.) was fourth at 55.45 meters (181'11").
In the pole vault, senior Craig Hunter (Robbinsville, N.J.) matched his season-best height from week ago to win the event at 5.20 meters (17'0.75"). Junior Ian Bergere (Madison, Conn.) posted his best vault of the season to take second, clearing the bar at 4.76 meters (15'7.25"), leaving him no seventh in the AAC rankings.
Freshman Todd Stueber (Toms River, N.J.) took second in the shot put with a throw of 16.07 meters (52'8.75"), his best throw this season. Stueber was fourth in the discus, registering a throw of 47.76 meters (156'08"), a season-best throw to put him eighth among league leaders. In the hammer, sophomore Cameron Thompson (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) was fifth with a throw of 59.95 meters (196'08").
In the triple jump, sophomore Ivan Nyemeck (Quebec City, Quebec) took first place with a leap of 14.82 meters (48'7.50"), a season-best mark to rank sixth among AAC leaders in the event.
Sophomore Jordan Torney (Toms River, N.J.) finished second in his first decathlon, totaling up 6,668 points that included a first place finish in the long jump at 11.78 meters (38'7.75"). He took second in the 100 meter dash at 11.18 seconds and the pole vault at 4.05 meters (13'3.5"). His performance is ranked fourth in the AAC this spring.
On the track, senior Trenten Beram (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) won the 400 meters with a time of 47.52 seconds. He also ran the 200 meter dash for the first time this spring and finished sixth overall with a time of 21.16 seconds, placing him third in the AAC rankings. Beram also acnhored the Huskies 4x400 meter relay that finished first with a season-best time of 3:14.17, fourth fastest in the AAC so far this spring. He was joined by freshman Omar Gebril (North Haven, Conn.), freshman Tyler Gleen (Trumbull, Conn.) and junior Kyle Trocki (Shrewsbury, Mass.) in the event.
In the 800 meters, junior PJ Garmon (Billerica, Mass.) took third overall with a time of 1:53.25, the eighth fastest time in the AAC this season, while senior Michael O'Donnell (Methuen, Mass.) was sixth at 1:53.64, his fastest time of the season. Senior Parker Timmerman (Brookfield, Conn.) ran the 1,500 meters posting a time of 3:59.07, good for a third place finish.
The Huskies will return to action next Saturday, April 14 when they host their only meet of the season in Storrs in the Northeast Challenge.
