Pereira promoted, Helton elevated to full-time assistant and Ferriss returns to Storrs
STORRS, Conn. – UConn head men's hockey coach Mike Cavanaugh announced his coaching staff for the upcoming 2018-19 season. Cavanaugh announced the promotion of Joe Pereira to Associate Head Coach and the hiring of Tyler Helton as an Assistant Coach and Joe Ferriss as a Graduate Assistant to fill out his staff.
Pereira has been a part of Coach Cavanaugh's staff since his first season as he begins his sixth year on the bench this fall. A native of West Haven, Connecticut, he has played a significant role in the program's recruiting efforts during his tenure with the Huskies as he moves into the role of senior member of the coaching staff as an associate head coach.
Helton has been a part of the UConn men's hockey program since his freshman year in Storrs in 2012 as he begins his first season as a full-time assistant coach in 2018-19.  He will assist the program working with the Husky defensemen, special teams and assisting with all aspects of recruiting.
Helton initially joined Coach Cavanaugh's staff in the fall of 2013 and has worked with the program as a student assistant and graduate manager over the past five seasons.
He was responsible for developing scouting reports on opponents and worked with the entire coaching staff on practice planning. Helton worked with players in individual skill sessions and assisted with coaching the Huskies special team units. He was responsible for all aspects of team video including pre-scout and post-game video break down, training student managers on in-game video and stats and breaking down NHL games for use as teaching points for players.
Away from Storrs, Helton has worked with USA Hockey district camps in New England and the Atlantic regions since the fall of 2016, scouting and evaluating top players and assisting with practice planning. He worked as a coach at the Western Regional High-Performance Camp in 2017 and 2018, working with players from the western United States. He began working with USA Hockey at the national camp in the summer of 2014 and has been a part of that program every summer since, coaching and evaluating players and assisting with player selection for the U17 and U16 teams.
Helton completed an USA Hockey internship in Colorado Springs, Colorado in the summer of 2016 as well as working with the USA Hockey Five Nations team that year. He also served as a coach with the Yale Midget AA split season teams in 2016 and 2017. Helton, who played for the Huskies as a freshman in 2012-13, graduated with a degree in sport management from UConn in 2016. He earned his master's degree in sport management in 2018.Â
Ferriss returns to his alma mater for his first collegiate coaching job and will serve in the role as a graduate assistant this season. He will assist the program with video breakdown of games and practices, developing scouting reports and practice plans.
Ferriss graduated from UConn in 2016 with a degree in exercise science after playing 120 games during his four-year career on the ice for the Huskies.Â
He began his coaching career after graduation working with the Boston Bandits NCDC of the USPHL in Bridgewater, Massachusetts where he was an assistant coach, was the U16 head coach and served as the strength and conditioning coach. He was involved with all aspects of the program including on-ice practice planning, game video breakdown and analysis, skating and skill sessions as well as designing and implementing strength and conditions programs for both in-season and off-season.
Prior to graduating from UConn, Ferriss interned with the UConn Sports Performance department where he assisted with coaching workouts for seven different varsity athletic programs. He designed and implemented the baseball freshmen summer training program and assisted with the staff on team program design. He worked directly with student-athletes on instructional training techniques and development.
During his playing days, Ferriss had 32 career points on 14 goals and 18 assists. Off the ice, he was a Dean's List student-athlete from 2012 through 2015, a three-time recipient of all-academic honors from both Atlantic Hockey and Hockey East and named an UConn Senior Scholar-Athlete award recipient.
