Student-athletes rely heavily on the help and support they receive from their coaches and academic advisors, but it is usually the advice they receive from fellow teammates that is hardest to forget.
Â
Just ask football's Tyler Davis, a redshirt junior tight end, about receiving advice and passing it on. Â
Â
"I remember when I first came to UConn, a senior told me that there is no such thing as having nothing to do when you're a student-athlete," Davis said. "You always have something to do and that's exactly what I told the freshmen. I think the same goes for graduate school. You will be successful if you stay on top of your work."
Â
Davis is entering his first year of graduate school at UConn, where he plans to get his master's degree in financial risk management and the words of wisdom he heard in his freshman year stand true in his graduate career as well.Â
Â
By playing a sport at any college, it is understood that academics are an integral part of the experience and as an upperclassman on a team with 100 other young men, you are forced to become the kind of role model, on and off the field, that you have always looked up to.
Â
By spending the last few weeks preaching to the freshman class on the importance of academics, Davis has done just that.
"Football is a sport that demands discipline and I think in the classroom you have to be the same way," Davis said. "You have to have a good routine. I try to get in my football work in a specific time period and once that is over, I set aside some time for school work. Then, I have class at night, so there is a good chunk during the day that I have to study. I do all those things when I'm supposed to do them. You can't fall behind."
Â
A majority of what is learned throughout one's athletic career is transferrable to the classroom. Being able to bring those skills with you in order to succeed is a gift. For Davis in particular, that skill is discipline.
Â
When it is time for Davis to say goodbye to the UConn football chapter of his life, the one place where he hopes to be spending his time is on Wall Street. The long hours, the stress and the pressure are all set to pay off when that dream becomes reality.
Â
As for now, he is focused on his school work, the current season and his teammates.
Â
"I think the tight ends are excited for this new opportunity that we have and we're just trying to do our best to help the offense out any way we can," Davis said. "We all have to focus on ourselves and really fine tune our technique and our fundamentals."
Â
With a touchdown already on his resume just one game into the season, Davis is on his way to a successful year. Considering the advice he's received and the advice he's given out, that's clearly no surprise.
