Columbia Wins, Huskies Third At UConn Invitational

HAMPDEN, Mass. – The Columbia University golf team picked the final round of the UConn Invitational at GreatHorse to shoot the tourney's best team round and wrap up the team championship with an impressive 7-over 292-292-287=871.
Columbia won by 14 strokes over second-place Lafayette, which shot a 21-over, 292-296-297=885, and by 15 strokes over a hard-charging UConn, which shot a 22-over, 298-294-294=886, to finish in third. The rest of the final standings of the 14-team field included Rider (897), Hartford (905), Army (906), Bryant (910), Siena (910), Fairleigh Dickinson (912), Sacred Heart (915), Lehigh (917), Saint Peter's (922), Canisius (924) and Wagner (940).
Columbia's Alvin Kwak won individual medalist honors with a 2-under 214, but UConn put three players in the top 10 of the 84-player field. Senior captain Drake Hull (Rutland, Vt.) produced the sixth Top 10 finish of his career with a 1-over, 71-72-74=217, his best tourney score of the season, good enough to tie for fourth place.
Redshirt junior Chandler Morris (Hobs Sound, Fla.) notched his third career Top 10 and fifth career Top 20 finishes with a 4-over, 78-71-71=220, good enough to tie for seventh place, including his second and third rounds of par-or-better this year. He led the tournament with 15 pars.
Playing as an individual, senior Tim Umphrey (Northborough, Mass.) had a 6-over, 75-72-75=222, giving him a tie for 10th place. It is the fourth top 10 finish of his career.
The remainder of UConn's lineup included junior Jack Boulger (Walpole, Mass.), who tied for 15th with an 8-over, 75-74-75=224, his third career Top 20. Sophomore Jared Nelson (Rutland, Vt.) shot a 10-over, 74-77-75=226 to tie for 23rd place and junior Rodrigo Sanchez (Santo Domingo, D.R.) tied for 42nd place with a 15-over, 78-79-74=231, his best tourney score of the year.
Besides Tim Umphrey, UConn had four other players compete as individuals. Sophomore Nick Hampoian (North Reading, Mass.) was second among individuals, only to teammate Umphrey, with a 9-over, 78-71-76=225, which tied him for 19th place. Junior Finn Boynton (Milford, Conn.) tied for 63th place with a 20-over, 84-76-76=236, freshman Matt Umphrey (Northborough, Mass.) finished 71st with a 23-over, 79-81-79=239, and freshman Logan Broyles (Mendon, Vt.) finished tied for 75th with a 25-over, 79-84-78=241.
It was the 11th year of the tournament and Columbia's win broke UConn's streak after two consecutive championships.
UConn will continue the fall portion of its schedule on Oct. 7-8, as its travels to the Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport, WVa., to compete in The Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational.
