Tight end Jayce Medlock comes to UConn from DeSoto, Texas, where he was a standout at DeSoto High School. According to head coach Randy Edsall, Medlock was not expected to play much this season, but injuries to the tight ends ahead of him forced him to step up into a bigger role. His best game so far came against Tulane, when he caught three passes for 42 yards.
Edsall said he has been impressed by what he's seen from Medlock to this point, especially his maturity and love for the game. Last week, we got to learn some more about him in an interview.
Q: Why did you pick UConn?
JM: I came on my visit up here, it felt like home instantly. Coach Edsall and everyone made me feel like I was meant to play here, so that's why I chose it.
Q: What's your favorite thing about playing football here so far?
JM: I like my teammates. We're a good group of guys. They make me feel comfortable.
Q: Did you expect to play as much as you have this year?
JM: I mean I expected that however hard I worked was going to be the outcome. So I work hard and get the results.
Q: What's it been like learning behind some veteran guys like Jay [Rose] and Donovan [Williams]?
JM: It's been great so far. They've been bringing me along and helping me with certain things, giving me tips and just keep building my game.
Q: Coach Edsall said ideally he would've had you redshirt this year, but due to the circumstances and the way you've been playing, you're going to play the whole year. How does that feel?
JM: It feels good, you know. Having a role in the offense is definitely good at this level, so I just gotta keep working.
Q: What's been the biggest adjustment for you from high school to college football?
JM: Mainly the strength part. I'm not as strong as these guys yet, so I just gotta continue to put on the weight and get stronger.
Q: What's something you've learned so far this season?
JM: I've learned that there's going to be ups and downs but you gotta keep working.
Q: What do you think is your best attribute you bring to the team?
JM: I think I can bring a passing attack to the tight end position, and I can also get in there and block if I need to.
Q: What's something you'd like to improve on?
JM: Definitely my strength and fundamentals.
Q: What is something you want UConn fans to know about you?
JM: That I'm here to put in some work and get you guys some wins. That's it.
Q: What's a goal for you for the rest of this season?
JM: A bowl game.
