MSOC, WSOC Announce Time Changes for Upcoming Home Games

STORRS, Conn. – The University of Connecticut has adjusted the game times for the upcoming men's and women's soccer home matches. Originally scheduled for 7 p.m. starts, UConn has moved kickoff times for the Oct. 8 men's soccer match to 1 p.m. and the Oct. 10 women's soccer contest up to 3 p.m. as a safety precaution after receiving guidance from the Connecticut Department of Public Health as it relates to the mosquito-borne eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus.
Mosquitos are most active beginning at dusk each evening and through the night until dawn. To help minimize exposure to mosquitos, the university is recommending to all units that outdoor activities and events scheduled to take place anytime between dusk and dawn be rescheduled to another time during the day, if possible, for the time being.
Mosquito activity continues until the first hard frost of the fall, which typically happens in October.
"Though the risk is low, as a precaution, we want to take any reasonable steps we can to help reduce the exposure of student-athletes, staff and the public to this illness," said UConn President Thomas Katsouleas. "I want to thank the conference, Providence, Houston and our own division of athletics for their flexibility."
The 1 and 3 p.m. kickoffs on October 8 and 10, respectively, will ensure that UConn fans, student-athletes and staff are outdoors during the hours of the day that see low mosquito activity. Additional game time changes, if necessary, will be announced at a later date.
