STORRS, Conn. – After a four-week break, the UConn men's cross country jumps back into action this Saturday at the annual Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh University.
"I think this is the first time in our program history we have had a four-week break like this and well, I am excited and the team is excited to get back after it," stated head coach Greg Roy. "I think this race equates to a kind of regional championship type setting. It will be a challenge for all of us. If we can get someone up there in the top-15, top-20, that would be a really good day."
This will be the 46th running of the Paul Short Invitational with the Huskies running in the Gold 8K race, set to step off at 11 am. Last season, UConn came home 19th as a team in a 41 team field.
"Basically, this is the first race of the season for us," commented Roy. "We have been working really well. The volume of work we have been doing is really good for everyone. We just want to keep progressing and I think we will know where we stand after this weekend."
The Huskies first action of the season took place back on September 7 when the Huskies ran in the UMass Invitational, a 6k race. Junior captain Eric Van Der Els (Norwalk, Conn.) was UConn's leader, winning the race for a second-straight season. He missed this race last season and last competed there in 2017.
Sophomores Will Brisman (Fairfield, Conn.) and James Maniscalco (Fairfield, Conn.) both ran in the Huskies top-seven finishers last season at the Paul Short Invite.
Following this Saturday's race, the Huskies will next run at the Princeton Invitational on October 19.
