UConn Returned to the Courts at Viking Invitational

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The UConn women's tennis team returned to action this weekend at the Cleveland State Viking Invitational, playing blind dual match format with the host Vikings, Akron and Xavier.
UConn sophomore Mirelle Moreau (Warwick, Quebec) won a pair of singles matches over the weekend while three Husky freshmen notched singles victories as well.
Moreau was a winner on Friday against Lara Prosenjak of Cleveland State, battling her way to a three-set victory. Moreau lost the first set, 6-3, but answered with a 6-2 win in the second and won the tie-breaker third, 1-0 (6). On Sunday, she posted another three-set win this time over Xavier's Emily Thomas. Once again, she dropped the first set, 6-1, but answered with a 6-2 win and battled to a 1-0 (13) win in the third.
Freshman Doga Selen Takunyaci (Istanbul, Turkey) also won a pair of singles matches. Takunayci won on Saturday in impressive fashion, 6-2, 6-1 over Holland Lang of Akron. She closed the weekend with a three-set win over Lauren Fitz-Randolph of Xavier, 5-7, 6-2 and 1-0 (4).
Senior Cassie Chung (Vancouver, British Columbia) earned a singles win over Prinkle Singh of Cleveland State, winning 6-1 and 6-2. She also earned a doubles win over CSU, teaming with sophomore Julieanne Bou (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) to beat Klara Mrcela and Prosenjak, 6-2.
Bou was a singles winner on Saturday against Akron, winning a three-set decision over Miruna Vasilescu. After falling 6-4 in the first, Bou answered by winning the second set 6-1 and the tiebreaker, 1-0 (8).
Freshman Denise Lai (Setauket, N.Y.) earned a three-set win over Rita Pedroso, 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (9) of Akron while fellow rookie Caroline Cook (Naples, Fla.) was an impressive 6-1, 6-1 winner over Aliona Kruglov
The Huskies will have next week off before getting ready to compete at the annual ITA Regional Championship at Army West Point on October 17-20.
