STORRS, Conn. – UConn director of cross-country and track & field Greg Roy announced that the team has elected their team captains for the 2020 indoor season. The Huskies have named R-Seniors Malik Snead (Trenton, N.J.) and Kyle Brackman (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) and R-Junior Jordan Torney (Toms River, N.J.) captains of the men's team and R-Senior Amaris Blount (Virginia Beach, Va.) and juniors Mia Nahom (New Milford, Conn.) and Taylor Woods (Marlboro, Md.) will serve as captains on the women's side.
"Both Teams made strong statements about what kind of person they want to lead with these elections," commented Roy. "What connects all six of these captains is they are people of high character and competitiveness. All of them have national level performances and competitive experience as well as the character that you look for in leaders. The entire coaching staff looks forward to partnering with the fine young folks to develop the teams and the program."
Blount will be one of the Husky leaders in the throwing events this season. During last season's indoor campaign, Blount recorded a pair of first-place finishes at the Nittany Lion Challenge 19.04m and the Scarlet & White Invitational 18.79m. She had her best throw of the indoor season of 19.13m at the Vanderbilt Invitational, taking fifth overall and breaking Vanderbilt's facility record of 17.82m. A two-time scorer in the hammer throw and weight throw at the AAC meets, she was also a NCAA East Regional qualifier in the hammer throw in 2018.
Brackman is ready for track season after not competing during the cross-country season. The senior distance runner has improved each season in Storrs and had a command performance at last spring's AAC Championship, earning a second-place finish in the 10,000 meters in career-best fashion and a fourth-place finish in the 5,000 meters. Brackman also qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary meet in the 5,000 last spring. Brackman has the experience of leading having served as the cross-country team captain in 2018.
Nahom is coming off a sensational cross-country season this fall as she transitions onto the track. Nahom became the first Husky to run in the NCAA National Championship since 2014. She qualified after an All-Northeast performance taking fourth overall at the NCAA Northeast Regional to follow up an All-AAC performance at the conference meet. On the track, Nahom has finished with the silver at the last two AAC indoor title events. As a freshman, she scored for the Huskies in the 1,500, 5,000 and 3,000-meter steeplechase during the outdoor season in 2018. This past fall, she also served as team captain of the cross-country team.
Snead was a UConn captain last season and will again help lead the group during the upcoming campaign. Snead is the two-time triple jump indoor champion in The American after successfully defending his crown at last season's meet. During the spring season, Snead grabbed a silver in the triple jump and a bronze in the long jump to run his career AAC medal total to six during his career. Snead also medaled at both the New England and IC4A championships during last year's indoor season. And during his career, he has been a two-time NCAA East Regional qualifier.
Torney already got his indoor season by posting a new career-best performance in the heptathlon at the UConn Multi-Event Challenge earlier this month. Torney finished second in the event by posting a personal best point total of 5,423 points and won the long jump, 60-meter dash and 60-meter hurdles. After redshirting last indoor season, Torney came back in outdoor and was the silver medal winner in the decathlon at last spring's AAC Championship.
Woods got off to a strong start to her season at the BU Season Opener by winning the long jump with a leap of 5.95 meters. Last year, she won the bronze in the long jump at the AAC Outdoor Championships, her second career medal in the event at the league title meet. She had a win and her career best jump at last year's UConn Northeast Challenge at 6.34 meters (20'9.75"). On the track, she posted a new personal best in the 200m with a time of 24.36 to score at ECAC indoor championships,
