KINGSTON, R.I. – The UConn men's track & field team headed over to the University of Rhode Island on Friday afternoon to take part in a pre-conference championship meet with the Rams. The Huskies sent a limited team of athletes and had a strong outing in their final tune-up before next week's American Athletic Conference Indoor Championship.
"It was a really good day all around for us," stated head coach Greg Roy. "A big PR for Todd Stueber in the shot put while Cam Thompson is ready for a big throw. I thought Malik looked great on the long jump runway, Ian Bergere looked fantastic in the pole vault and our sprinters and hurdlers looked sharp and on the oval."
"Kyle Barber accomplished his goal which was to just get out and go," stated Roy. "It was great to see Omar Gebril and Greg Clark get their first college wins. Overall, a good day and a good week. Now, its time to head to Birmingham."
Sophomore Todd Stueber (Toms River, N.J.) had a big day, vaulting up to fifth in the AAC rankings in the shot put thanks to a PR to win the event on Friday. On his fourth attempt of the day, Steuber unleashed a throw of 17.17 meters (56'4"), a new personal best by just over a foot.
Senior Kyle Barber (Fayetteville, N.Y.) ran his first 800 meters of the season and turned in a top time of 1:53.97, a time that is the third fastest by a Husky this season and puts him ninth among AAC leaders.
Sophomore Omar Gebril (North Haven, Conn.) picked-up his first collegiate win by taking the 400 meters, clocking in at 49.75 seconds. In the 500 meters, freshman Gregory Clark (Quaker Hill, Conn.) won his first collegiate race, finishing first with a time of 1:06.56.
The Huskies will now move on to next weekends AAC Indoor Championship at the Birmingham Crossplex in Birmingham, Alabama on Friday and Saturday, February 22 and 23.
