HARTFORD, Conn. – Boston University junior goaltender Jake Oettinger stopped all 26 shots he faced on Saturday night to deal the UConn Huskies a 2-0 loss at Agganis Arena to split the weekend Hockey East series.
The Huskies were shutout for the fourth time this season as they fall to 10-18-2 overall and 5-13-2 in Hockey East with the loss. The Terriers move to 11-15-3 and 9-8-2 in the league.
The two teams played a scoreless first and second period before BU tacked on two in the third. Sophomore Ty Amonte provided the game-winning goal at 1:16 and freshman Joel Farabee added a shorthanded goal at 15:42 to wrap up the scoring.
UConn goaltender Tomas Vomacka (Trutnov, Czech Republic) stopped 26 shots, making 14 saves in the first period.
The Huskies came up empty on their three power play chances in the loss.
1st Period:
A fast paced first period didn't see any penalties while BU put 14 shots on Vomacka to UConn's nine on Oettinger.
2nd Period:
The Huskies got a pair of power plays in the second including a 4-on-3 chance but couldn't find an answer for Oettinger.
3rd Period:
The Terriers were the first team to strike, ending the game's scoring drought at 1:16. Vomacka made a nice sliding save on a Cam Crotty shot but Amonte was sitting right on the doorstep to clean up the rebound for his sixth on the season and a 1-0 lead.
UConn's Ruslan Iskhakov (Moscow, Russia) got a break-away chance on the next UConn possession but a BU defender tipped the puck away from behind just before he could get a shot off, thwarting the threat. The Huskies got another break-away chance, this time shorthanded, with 12:41 left but Alexander Payusov (Montreal, Quebec) was denied by Oettinger.
The Huskies pulled Vomacka with 1:21 left but Oettinger and the Terriers kept the slate clean.
