ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Senior captain Monica Marcello qualified for NCAA National Championships in the 3M Dive on Monday afternoon at the NCAA A Diving Zones at the US Naval Academy.
Marcello secured second place in the preliminaries with a mark of 307.10 and then bettered her mark in the finals with a score of 632.35 to capture a runner-up finish. Marcello took second place among a tough field of 30 different schools, eight conferences and 55 total divers.
Marcello becomes the first Husky since Alli Butera in 2017 to reach the NCAA National Championships. The Championships take place in Austin, Texas from March 20-23.
The UConn diving team has a legacy of reaching the pinnacle of the sport under head coach John Bransfield with divers qualifying for Nationals in seven of the past nine years (2011, '12, '13, '15, '16, '17, '19).
Marcello is coming off a stellar performance at The American Conference Championships where the Middletown, Conn. native set the Conference record in the 3M dive en route to gold and secured a silver medal in the 1M event.
Erin Clifford (27th), Kamrin Dawkins (40th) and Elizabeth Drab (43) all competed in the preliminary round of Zones but did not finish high enough (top-18) to reach the finals.
The Huskies will continue the NCAA Zone A Championships on Tuesday in the 1M dive.
