AUSTIN, Texas – Senior diver Monica Marcello ended her career on Friday at the peak of the sport, competing at the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas.
Outside of the Olympics, this is the place where you find all of the top divers in the country. After top-notch performances at The American Championships and the NCAA Zone A meets, Marcello qualified and competed in the 1M and 3M dive amongst the best of the best.
After a tough day in the 1M on Thursday, Marcello bounced back in a big way on Friday by scoring a 309.95 in preliminaries to secure a top-16 spot and reach the consolation finals. Marcello landed in 16th place at the end of competition and captured a point for UConn in the meet. Something that many teams are unable to attain at the Championships.
"Following a difficult one-meter event, where she struggled to find rhythm and finished towards the bottom, she got her head straight and fought every round," said head diving coach John Bransfield. "I couldn't be more proud of what she accomplished against the best collegiate divers in the country, especially with this being her first time competing at the National Championship."
