STORRS, Conn. – The UConn women's tennis team celebrated "Senior Day" on Friday afternoon and did so in perfect fashion, blanking the visiting Bryant Bulldogs, 7-0, at the UConn Tennis Courts. The Huskies honored seniors Jacquelyn Fitz-Randolph (Tampa, Fla.), Jacqueline Lazaro (Largo, Fla.) and Gillian Perrotta (Scarsdale, N.Y.) and their families after the match.
The Huskies got a pair of wins from Lazaro to lead the charge to their first sweep of the season. "This was a special day because everyone played well on senior day," commented head coach Glenn Marshall. "Even in the close, challenging matches for the seniors, it's great for them to come through and get a win so they can always have that memory."
UConn clinched the doubles point thanks to wins at No. 2 and No. 3. The freshmen duo of Julieanne Bou (Baymon, Puerto Rico) and Mireille Moreau (Warwick, Quebec) got it started with a perfect 6-0 win over Arianna Oropeza and Aleksi Gottlieb at No. 2. Lazaro and junior Cassie Chung (Vancouver, British Columbia) clinched the point thanks to a 6-2 win at No. 3 over Leanne Kendall and Gabrielle Bergeron.
In singles, the rookie tandem of Bou and Moreau were both winners. Bou grabbing her 16th win by beating Oropeza, 6-4 and 6-1 at No. 2 while Moreau won at No. 3, 6-2 and 6-4 over Sarah Hickey. Chung was also a double winner on Friday, posting a 6-0 and 6-1 win at No. 4 over Gottlieb, her 12th win of the season. Freshman Luciana Rabines (Barcelona, Spain) won her No. 6 match in three sets, beating Bergeron, 7-5, 1-6, 6-1.
Appropriately, the match would end with the two UConn seniors, Lazaro and Fitz-Randolph grinding out three-set wins. Lazaro would beat Leanna Kendall at No.5 , 6-2, 4-6 and 10-7 in a tie-break third. Fitz-Randolph put the finishing touches on the win by taking down Yasemin Boru at No. 1, 5-7, 6-2 and 10-6 in the tie-breaker.
"These three have meant the world to the program," stated Marshall. "They have excelled in the classroom and on the court. They are set up for life. They are just such good and respectful student-athletes and I am just so proud to be their coach and I wish them well."
The Huskies have three road matches left before the postseason, starting on Wednesday at Boston University.
