American Athletic Conference Release
STORRS, Conn.—The sophomore duo of Briana Marcelino and Marybeth Olson were named the American Athletic Conference's Player and Pitcher of the week as announced by the league office today. The pair aided their team in securing yet another conference series this season.
UConn played six games last week; a doubleheader at Hartford, singled game vs. UMass, and a weekend conference series hosting Memphis. The Huskies went four-and-two on the week, headlined by Olson's no-hitter and six home runs on the week.
For the second week in a row Marcelino wears the crown of conference's top player. She started in each game and posted incredible numbers through her 18 at-bats. Marcelino nabbed seven runs, 11 hits, nine RBIs, two doubles, a home run, .611 batting average, .650 on base percentage, and .889 slugging percentage. On the defensive side of the diamond she had 14 putouts, 10 assists and only one error.
After catching the conference's eye twice and landing on the honor roll, Olson's (9-8) hard work in the circle is finally rewarded. She started in three games and made four total appearances last week. Through the 20 innings pitched she garnered three wins and only one loss, in addition to her no-hitter in game one in West Hartford. She struck out 28 batters leading to her striking out her 100th batter on the season through 101.1 innings pitched. Olson's stat line for the week: nine hits, six runs, only five walks, and an ERA of 1.75.
"I am so proud of both Marybeth and Briana. It is an honor for our program and for the University. Marybeth is an absolute bulldog on the mound and just digs in and attacks opposing hitters. She has stepped up this year into a really big role and I couldn't be more proud of her. She is an excellent representation of our university and the climb of our program. Briana continues to impress both on defense and at the plate. She has a tremendous command in the batter's box and is seeing the ball really well right now. Briana has worked really hard in the offseason and her efforts are paying dividends this season. We look forward to continuing to battle each weekend through a very tough conference slate."
—Head Coach Jen McIntyre
The Huskies will play Boston College tomorrow in a single game at 3:00 p.m. on Burrill Family Field before traveling to take on conference foe Houston this weekend.
