RUTLAND, Vt. --- UConn rising senior Drake Hull just refuses to let go of the Vermont Amateur Golf Championship.
For the third consecutive year, Hull (Rutland, Vt.) captured the Vermont amateur title, this time shooting a 5-under 66-73-70-66=275 at the Rutland Country Club to win the 2019 championship by six strokes.
Hull shot the tourney's lowest round with a 66 and he shot it twice, during the first and final rounds. Hull, representing the Rutland Country Club, was tied at the top of the leaderboard with Bryson Richards, at the conclusion of the third round and actually fell behind by two shots early in the final round.
But Hull came from behind in a big way.
He hit 15 greens and an apron in the final round and saved numerous pars with clutch putting, taking advantage of any mistake by his opponent. Hull took the lead on the front nine of the final round, upped the margin to two shots with a birdie on No. 10 and never trailed again.
Still, Richards remained in close contention until Hull took complete command on put o. 17, as Richards found a hazard on his approach and double-bogeyed the hole, while Hull placed a wedge shot within two feet and birdied the hole.
The two had to sit through two rain delays before beginning their final round in the afternoon and had to play under some light rain throughout the round, but nothing could rain on Hull's parade. He is the first player to win three straight Vermont amateur titles since Trevor Murphy accomplished the feat from 2005-07. Hull won the 2017 crown at Dorset Field Club (Dorsett, Vt.) and successfully defended his championship in 2018 at the Country Club of Vermont (Waterbury, Vt.).
Hull also had two future UConn teammates join him in the final top 10 of the Vermont Amateur. Jared Nelson, who will be a sophomore at UConn in 2019-20 after transferring from Siena, shot a 5-over 71-71-75-68=285 to tie for fifth. Logan Broyles, an incoming UConn freshman, shot a 10-over 72-73-76-69=290 to finish in ninth place.
Hull was second on the UConn team in 2018-19 with a 71.9 per round scoring average. He had three Top 10 Finishes, including winning individual medalist honors at the Rutherford Intercollegiate. He had 20 rounds of par or better and five sub-70 rounds. Following the college season, he was named to the Division I PING All-Northeast Region Team for the second consecutive season.
