UConn Golfers Fourth After First Round Of Tourney

HAMPDEN, Mass. --- With breezy conditions keeping low scoring at a minimum, the UConn golf team fought its way to a tie for fourth place after the first round Sunday at its own UConn Invitational at GreatHorse.
Only five players in the entire 84-player field managed to shoot under par for the round, one of whom was UConn senior captain Drake Hull (Rutland, Vt.), who had a 1-under 71 to tie for second place. Ryan Tomaso of Hartford leads the tournament with a 5-under 67, while Columbia's Daniel Core and Nathan Han and Lafayette's Martin Vanhaelst each shot a 1-under 71 to deadlock with Hull.
The UConn Invitational continues with Round 2 on Monday and finishes with Round 3 on Tuesday.
Lafayette and Columbia each shot an aggregate 4-over 292 to share the first-round lead, while Rider's 7-over 295 was good enough for third place in the 14-team field. UConn and Army each posted a 10-over 298 to tie for fourth, and Hartford was sixth with a 15-over 303.
Also for UConn, Jared Nelson (Rutland, Vt.) was tied for 13th with a 2-over 74, Jack Boulger (Walpole, Mass.) was tied for 17th with a 3-over 75 and Chandler Morris (Hobe Sound, Fla.) and Rodrigo Sanchez (Santo Domingo, D.R.) shared a tie for 41st place as each had a 6-over 78.
Playing as individuals, UConn's Tim Umphrey (Northborough, Mass.) was tied for 17th with a 3-over 75, Nick Hampoian (North Reading, Mass.) was also tied for 41st with a 6-over 78, Logan Broyles (Mendon, Vt.) and Matt Umphrey (Northborough, Mass.) were each tied for 54th with a 7-over 79, and Finn Boynton (Milford, Conn.) was tied for 77th with a 12-over 84.
It is the 11th year of the tournament, formally known as the Connecticut Cup.
