PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The UConn women's tennis team was on the road again this weekend and headed to Philadelphia where they took on the Drexel Dragons on Thursday. The Huskies lost a tough fought 5-2 decision to the Dragons and fall to 2-2 this spring in dual matches.
"This was a very competitive match today with Drexel," stated director of tennis Glenn Marshall. "For the last several years, the matches with Drexel are always close, and this year was no exception. We dropped the doubles point, but it came down to just a few points at second doubles."
The UConn No. 3 doubles team of sophomore Luciana Rabines (Barcelona, Spain) and freshman Denise Lai (Setauket, N.Y.) got a win over Mya Fuentas and Tara Veluvolu to pull the match even at 1-1 in the doubles portion. Drexel grabbed the opening point at the No. 2 spot where Ghita Benhadi and C. Corte Gonzalez beat UConn's sophomore-freshman tandem of Julieanne Bou (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) and Caroline Cook (Naples, Fla.) in a tight 6-4 match.
"In the singles matches, every match was tightly contested," stated Marshall. "We were lead today by outstanding performances by Denise Lai and Luciana Rabines, who won both their singles and doubles matches. It came down to a couple of three set matches, and Drexel stepped up in the end."
Rabines had a nice comeback three-set win at No. 3, losing the first set 6-0 to Fuentes but answering with a 6-2 and 6-3 win to take the match. At No. 5, Lai posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over Marta Martinez.
"I was proud of the fight today, and am looking forward to getting back on the winning side of things with our match against Temple on Friday." The Huskies face their first AAC competition on Friday when they travel to Temple to take on the Owls to close their road trip.
