PROVIDENCE – For the second consecutive week, UConn senior guard Christian Vital has been named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week after outstanding performances that led the Huskies to victories over Houston and Tulane.
Vital scored a game-high 26 points, to go along with two rebounds and two steals, and he made eight consecutive free throws down the stretch to clinch a 77-71 upset of nationally-ranked Houston on March 5 at Gampel Pavilion on Senior Night.
On March 8 at Tulane, Vital poured in 28 points, 14 in each half, pulled down six rebounds and had two steals to spark the Huskies to an 80-76 triumph.
For the week, Vital averaged 27.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 2.0 steals per game. In addition, he shot an impressive 55.2 percent overall, 45.4 percent from three-point range, and canned 17 of 19 free throws (89.5 percent).
UConn will begin postseason play this week at the AAC Championship. The Huskies, seeded No. 5, will challenge No. 12 Tulane in the tourney's first round on Thursday, March 12, at 3 p.m. at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas. Â Â Â Â
