PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The UConn women's tennis team closed out the fall portion of their schedule over the weekend taking part in the Brown Invitational. The event was held as an eight-team compass draw using the blind dual match format.
The Huskies played UMass and Dartmouth on Saturday with the matches using modified sets to four games. Sunday's match against Villanova used the normal scoring format.
"This was a nice tournament to finish out our fall season," stated Director of Tennis Glenn Marshall. "We had opportunities to play some very good schools, and played some great matches. The team environment for these events is awesome, as it prepares us for our spring dual match season."
"This weekend we were led by our outstanding new freshman, Isabel Petri-Bere," commented Marshall. "She played great in singles going 3-0, and won 2 out of 3 doubles matches."
Petri-Bere had a perfect weekend on the singles courts, posting wins on Saturday over Dartmoouth's Jingyi Peng, 4-1, 4-2 and over UMass's Dylan Cannon, in three sets, 4-2, 1-4, 10-5. On Sunday, she beat Villanova's Taylor Gould, 6-4, 6-3.
In doubles play she teamed with sophomore Aleksandra Karamyshev (Ashton, Md.) for a win over Lexi Dewire and Peng from Dartmouth, 6-4, and over Villanova's Gould and Bella Steffen, 6-0.
Sophomore Leonie Hoppe (Munich, Germany) also went 3-0 in singles action over the weekend. She topped Elizabeth Fahrmeier of Dartmouth in three set, 1-4, 4-2, 10-2 and won another three-set match on Saturday against UMass's Renata Farmia, 4-0, 1-4, 10-6. She wrapped her weekend with a win over Caitlin Fisher of Villanova. Junior Denise Lai (Setauket, N.Y.) picked-up two singles wins, beating Ameliija Swaffer-Selff of Dartmouth, 4-2, 4-5 and 13-11 and Chloe Floyd of Villanova, 7-5, 6-3.
"The entire team competed well, and we all feel like we made some great progress this fall season. Now, we will get after it in the weight room and with our conditioning program, to prepare for the spring season."
