HARTFORD, Conn. --- The No. 23 UConn men's basketball team overcame a poor shooting start and went on to post its fourth straight victory, an 87-63 victory over Binghamton Saturday afternoon before 9,335 at the XL Center.
The Huskies (4-0) hit only one of their first 13 shots and trailed, 7-4, when sophomore Andre Jackson ignited the crowd and picked up his teammates with a thunderous, one-hand slam dunk on a rebound. That was the start of a 19-2 UConn explosion that put the Huskies in control, 23-9.
Led by a strong showing off the bench by reserves Tyler Polley, Jalen Gaffney and Akok Akok, UConn maintained the lead to go up 37-22 at halftime.
Binghamton (1-3) found its shotting touch in the second half, but never threatened UConn's lead. The Huskies' biggest margin of the game was the final score.
Senior Tyrese Martin recorded UConn's first double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds and added four assists and three steals in an all-around solid effort.
Sophomore Adama Sanogo added 12 points, freshman Jordan Hawkins had his first double-figure game with 11, and grad Tyler Polley chipped in with 10. Jackson had 9 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.
Tyler Bertram led the Bearcats with 15 points.
UConn continued its solid defensive effort, holding Binghamton to 37.5 percent shooting, but forced just 11 turnovers, far before the 26 turnovers per game that UConn's opponents have been averaging.
UConn will leave its home venues for the first time this season, when it travels to Paradise Island in the Bahamas next week to compete in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament. The Huskies challenge nationally-ranked Auburn in the tourney's first round on Wednesday, Nov. 24, at 2:30 p.m. (ESPN).
