STORRS, Conn. - After a one-year hiatus due to Covid-19, the Sports Performance 5K Husky Obstacle Course returned for rowing, golf, softball, baseball, women's lacrosse and men's track and field.
This annual competition, which kicks off at 6:00 a.m. on the last mandatory day of training for off-season sports, commences a major and extensive 60 minute period of training consisting of a total distance 5 kilometers with 11 obstacles, requiring a combination of strength, stamina and most importantly, teamwork. Competing student-athletes are broken down into smaller teams of 5-8 athletes.Â
The 5K Husky Obstacle Challenge finishes at the Storrs Brothers' Monument at the top of Cemetery Hill to acknowledge the hard work of the University founders and reflect on the opportunities that we have been given and accept the challenge to pay it forward while overlooking the quiet, still campus.
The event was formed in 2015 following in the footsteps of the baseball team who had a similar setup to close out their fall. This new event was designed as a way to bring multiple teams together and culminate off-season training in a competitive environment. The Sports Performance Department hosts this event twice per year at the end of each Fall & Spring semester
