Kinney Sweeps Big East Freshman and Pitcher Honors, Wivell Named to Honor Roll

STORRS, Conn. – Following an impressive performance in her first weekend of collegiate softball, Payton Kinney was elected the Big East Pitcher and Freshman of the Week for Feb. 22. Redshirt Junior Hollis Wivell also picked up Big East honors as she was named to the Weekly Honor Roll.
Kinney had a sensational opening weekend in the circle for the Huskies, picking up wins over NIU and FIU. The freshman appeared in four games with three starts, ending the weekend with a 2-1 record and an ERA of 0.52 after 27 innings of work. Kinney racked up 26 strikeouts - including a season-high nine in Sunday's game against FGCU, while surrendering just three extra-base hits. Additionally, the Bradenton, Fla., native allowed just two earned runs over her four appearances on the mound.
Wivell appeared in five games with four starts and assisted UConn to a 3-2 mark this past weekend. The redshirt junior accumulated seven hits in 15 at-bats, including a 3-of-4 hitting performance in the 4-3 win over FIU Feb. 19. Wivell also notched two runs, an RBI, a stolen base while posting a team-best .467 average.
