Marcelino, Sanden Earn Big East POTW Honors

STORRS, Conn. – After helping lead the team to a 7-3 victory over No. 21 Baylor this past Saturday, senior Briana Marcelino and freshman Jana Sanden took home Big East Player of the Week honors while freshman Payton Kinney was named to the weekly honor roll. This marks the second consecutive week that UConn has garnered at least one major conference honor.
Marcelino was named the Big East Player of the Week after batting .417 and putting up three home runs, one double and five RBI in a five-game weekend for UConn in Waco, Texas. The Easton, Conn., native shined in the Huskies' upset of No. 21 Baylor, as she went 2-for-2 from the plate and tallied a homer, two walks, three runs and two RBI. Marcelino was also 2-for-2 in Saturday's win over Lamar, and totaled a .563 on base percentage for the weekend.
Big East Freshman of the Week was awarded to Sanden after she batted .357 with two RBI's and two doubles over five games. In Saturday's win over No. 21 Baylor, the rookie was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a double, while also reaching base on a walk.
Kinney picked up weekly honor roll honors after registering three starts in the four games she appeared in over the weekend, going 1-2. The freshman picked up nine strikeouts through 14 innings of work, including three in the Huskies' 7-3 victory over No. 21 Baylor Saturday night.
