STORRS, Conn. - The UConn women's tennis team notched their third-straight win by beating Siena, 5-2, Saturday afternoon at the Magic Lincer Tennis Academy in Manchester. The Huskies improve to 3-1 this spring.
"We were led by Julieanne, Leonie, and Caroline, all who were double winners on the day in singles and doubles," commented Director of Tennis Glenn Marshall. The Huskies were again strong in double play to open the match, clinching the opening point at No.1. "The doubles point was exciting, as it came down to the number one team of Bou and Hoppe," stated Marshall. "They had a back-and-forth match and played a great tiebreaker to secure our doubles point."
Sophomore Caroline Cook (Naples, Fla.) and freshman Aleksandra Karamyshev (Ashton, Md.) got things rolling with a 6-4 win at No. 3 over Emma Boggiali and Anastasia Koniaev. After Siena rallied at No. 2, the point was decided in the top spot as junior Julieanne Bou (Baymon, Puerto Rico) and freshman Leonie Hoppe (Munich, Germany) won in a 7-6 battle over Meagan Brown and Kylie Mullaney.
"That momentum definitely propelled us to start the singles matches with first set wins on all 6 courts," said Marshall. "It was a challenge on many courts, but our team played tough and definitely has gained some valuable match experience from our last two matches. I was pleased with the effort and fight from all of the players, and look forward to continue our winning ways next week."
Hoppe started the singles wins off with a 6-2 , 6-4 victory at No. 2 over Mullaney and Bou followed by beating Brown at No. 1, 7-6 and 6-1. Sophomore Doga Selen Takunyaci (Istanbul, Turkey) won at No. 5 and clinched the match by beating Boggiali, 6-4 and 6-1. Cook closed out the UConn singles wins by beating Nanea Perkins at No. 4, 7-6 and 6-4.
The Huskies are back on their home indoor courts at Magic Lincer Tennis Academy on Wednesday afternoon, March 17 for a 1 pm match against in-state rival Quinnpiac.
