STORRS, Conn. - The UConn women's tennis team got back in the win column on Wednesday with a 5-2 win over in-state rival Fairfield University at the Magic Lincer Tennis Academy in Manchester. The Huskies improved to 5-3 in the spring with the win.
"Today was a really good win over a strong Fairfield team," stated Director of Tennis Glenn Marshall. "I am pleased with how we responded from our weekend match, and brought a focused effort to the courts today. Our doubles was again a strong point, and we played well on all three courts."
For the seventh time in eight dual matches this spring, the Huskies opened the match by taking the doubles point. The Huskies swept all three matches and got things started at No. 2 where sophomre Denise Lai (Setauket, N.Y.) and Doga Selen Takunyaci (Istanbul, Turkey) posted a 6-0 win. The sophomore-freshman combo of Caroline Cook (Naples, Fla.) and Aleksandra Karamyshev (Ashton, Md.) clinced the point with a 6-4 win at No. 3. Junior Julieanne Bou (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) and freshman Leonie Hoppe (Munich, Germany) made it a clean sweep winning 7-6 at the top spot.
"Denise and Selen had their best match of the season, and set the tone with a quick win at #2 doubles," commented Marshall. "Moving into singles, we knew Fairfield was going to respond, since they had many strong players. To our credit, the team came out strong winning the first set on 4 of the 6 courts."
In singles, Karamyshev opened with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Anna Komer at No. 5 to get things rolling. Bou won her No. 1 singles match with Scarlett Hutchinson, 6-1 and 6-3 and then Takunyaci clinched the win at No. 4 by posting a 6-1, 6-3 win over Aina March. Both Bou and Takunyaci improved to 5-2 on the season.
Hoppe made it a five-point day for the Huskies as she won her match at No. 2, 6-2 adn 6-3, over Katarina Plumtree.
"Julieanne played a really solid match at #1 singles, never letting up in a straight set victory. Also playing well and focused were Hoppe, Takunyaci and Karamyshev, each winning in straight sets. I'm very pleased with the effort and fight today, and look forward to our upcoming match with Seton Hall on Friday."
The Huskies will get their first taste of BIG EAST competition when they host Seton Hall at Magic Lincer Tennis Academy on Friday afternoon at 3:30 pm.
