Huskies Dominate at UConn Dog Fight Home Meet

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn men's track & field team solidified their hold on their top-ranking in the USTFCCCA Northeast Region by dominating their second home meet of the outdoor season and toping a field that featured UAlbany, Rhode Island and Southern Connecticut State.
The Huskies won nine of the 11 events on the track and pilling up 295 total points to win their second scored meet of the spring. UConn improved to 8-0 in their meets at George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex this season.
"This was a great competition for us," commented Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Greg Roy. "This is a good team. We've been building at it and building towards this. Last year, we were rolling indoor season and everything had to come to an end. So now we are working back to that point and I am excited with where we are at right now."
"Now we get this week and take a look at where we at with each individual; making we know what we need to do for our individuals to hit those NCAA mark and prepare as a team to be ready for that conference championship," commented Roy. "We are in a great spot. Really happy with both teams this weekend."
On the track…
- The Huskies got the day started strong going 1-2 in the 3,000m steeplechase. Sophomore Kevin Cawley (Massapequa, N.Y.) took home the win in his first time running the event for the Huskies, posting a time of 9:13.75. Classmate Chris Lepore (Trumbull, N.Y.) was second at 9:35.60.
- The UConn 4x100 relay team kept the momentum going with a blazing win, at 40.08 seconds to beat out UAlbany. The foursome of junior Josiah Thompson (Jamaica, N.Y.), sophomore Joseph O'Brien (Shrewsbury, Mass.), junior Aaron Hackett (Upper Marlboro, Md.), and junior Noah Woodman (Hampstead, N.H.) ran the fastest time this season for the Huskies and still at the top of the conference rankings.
- O'Brien, Hackett and Thompson all factored in the 100-meter dash as well. O'Brien grabbed his second win this spring and did so with a time of 10.65 seconds. Hackett was third in 10.86 seconds and Thompson was fourth at 10.87 seconds.
- O'Brien became a triple-winner on Saturday late in the meet when he posted a new PR in the 200 meters to win. He clocked in at 21.31 seconds to top the field, get his second win in the event this spring and also stay unbeaten in any race this season.
- In the 400 meters, the one-two punch of juniors Wellington Ventura (Cresskill, N.J.) and Woodman took the top-two spots. Ventura posted the fastest outdoor time of his career in the event clocking in at 46.69 seconds. Woodman was right on his heels at 46.79 seconds.
- The 110-meter hurdles saw three Huskies cross the finish line ahead of the field. Freshman Terrel Williams (Maplewood, N.J.) grabbed his second win in the event this spring, clocking in at 14.39 seconds. Senior Jordan Torney (Toms River, N.J.) was second at 14.48 seconds and freshman Donovan Wright (Burlington, N.J.) was third at 14.99.
- The Huskies took five of the top-six spots in the 800 meters led by senior Brian Camillieri (Pearl River, N.Y.) who won with a new PR of 1:51.49. Sophomore Marzio Mastroianni (Branford, Conn.) also had a new PR to finish second in 1:52.56.
- Sophomore Stephen Sutton (Tolland, Conn.) won the 1,500 meters, his second win in the event on the Huskies' home track. Sutton posted a time of 3:53.55.
- Senior Colt Nichols (Portsmouth, R.I.) won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 53.80 seconds.
In the field…
- UConn dominated in the pole vault with sophomore Travis Snyder (Saco, Maine) leading the way. Snyder won for the second time this spring posting a height of 5.06 meters. Junior Tyler Hrbek (Northvale, N.J.) was second at 4.91 meters and senior Devon McShane (Madison, Conn.) was third with a new PR height of 4.91 meters.
- In the high jump, senior Daniel Claxton (Nesconset, N.Y.) turned in his best jump this spring at 2.10 meters to notch his second win this spring. Classmate Benjamin Grosse (Wayzata, Minn.) finished second at 2.00 meters. Junior Nicholas Pronovost (Coventry, Conn.) took fourth with a new PR height of 2.00 meters.
- Junior Chris Keegan (West Hartford, Conn.) picked-up his second win this spring in the hammer throw as the Huskies went 1-2 in the event. Keegan posted a throw of 59.44 meters while senior Cameron Thompson (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) finishd second with a throw of 56.49 meters.
- Junior Michael Jeffers (Clifton Park, N.Y.) set a new PR in the javelin and took third place with a throw of 64.06 meters. Junior Colin Winkler (Barkhamstead, Conn.) was right behind him in fourth at 61.16 meters.
- Senior Matthew Brady (Biddeford, Maine) set a new PR while finishing second in the shot put at 17.65 meters. He took fourth in the discus with a throw of 47.57 meters. Senior Todd Stueber (Toms River, N.J.) took second in the shot put at 17.20 meters.
- Freshman Richmond Kwaateng (Lowell, Mass.) turned in his best long jump of the spring to finish second, coming in at 7.35 meters.
