STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The UConn men's golf team will head into its final tune-up before the BIG EAST Conference Championship when it competes this weekend in the 44th Rutherford Intercollegiate, hosted by Penn State University on the Penn State Blue Course.
The 14-team tournament will be held on Saturday (Rounds 1 & 2) and Sunday (Round 3), with groups going off Holes 1 and 10. Besides UConn and the host school, the rest of the 2021 field includes Bowling Green, Dayton, Eastern Kentucky, George Mason, Georgetown, Kent State, Loyola (Md.), Maryland, Oakland, Rutgers, Seton Hall and West Virginia.
The Rutherford was canceled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the 2019 event was won by UConn's Drake Hull with a 5-under, 208. The Penn State Blue Course is a 7,219-yard, Par 71. The tournament is named for R.B. "Pop" Rutherford, who organized the first Penn State golf team in 1922 and coached the team until 1949.
UConn has played in seven events during the 2021 spring season, with 5 Top Five finishes, including a first, three seconds, and a fifth. The Huskies are led by freshman Caleb Manuel (Topsham, Me.), with a 73.4 per round average for 15 rounds, and junior Jared Nelson (Rutland, Vt.), with a 73.9 average.
Also in the usual UConn lineup are freshman Tommy Dallahan (Simsbury, Conn.), averaging 75.1, freshman Jimmy Paradise (Tampa, Fla.), averaging 75.2, and senior Rodrigo Sanchez (Santo Domingo, D.R.), averaging 75.5.
Following the Rutherford, the Huskies will compete in the BIG EAST Championship, set for April 26-28 at the Streamsong Resort in Bowling Green, Fla.
