Senior Day for Men's Track Features Great Performances

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn men's track & field team hosted their final home meet of the outdoor season on Friday, the UConn Northeast Invitational and saw plenty of strong performances and new PRs set in their lineup at the unscored team meet. UConn welcomed athletes from Brown, Northeastern, URI and SCSU to campus on Friday.
"We had some great performances today," stated associate head coach Rich Miller. "Our focus has been on our execution. As a whole, I was very impressed with our kid's energy and execution today."
"Todd Stueber led the way winning both shot put and discus events and Mike Jeffers and Colin winkler were tremendous taking the top two places in the javelin with big lifetime bests," stated Miller. "Travis Snyder and Tyler Hrbek also had lifetime bests with a 1-2 finish in the pole vault. Dan Claxton was great in the high jump winning with his best jump this season and Safir Scott continues to make progress winning in his first long jump competition this season."
"On the track, Joey O'Brien turned in a lifetime best in his 200m victory and Josiah Thompson had a breakout performance in the 100m," commented Miller. "Eric Van Der Els and James Maniscalco had impressive wins in the 1500 and 5k this afternoon, especially in their first races of the season they were very strong in very windy conditions."
In addition to Friday's events, the Huskies had a chance to honor their graduating seniors during the meet. The UConn coaching staff honored seniors Brian Camilleri (Pearl River, N.Y.), Marc DeLuca (Stamford, Conn.), Omar Gebril (North Haven, Conn.), Michael Jeffers (Clifton Park, N.Y.), Devon McShane (Madison, Conn.), Colt Nichols (Portsmouth, R.I.), Todd Stueber (Toms River, N.J.) and Cameron Thompson (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) in their final home competition at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex.
On the track…
- Senior Eric Van Der Els (Norwalk, Conn.) ran his first 1,500 of the season and put in a winning effort with a new PR, clocking in at 3:48.99.
- In the 200 meters, sophomore Joseph O'Brien (Shrewsbury, Mass.) was the winner and did so by setting a new PR with a time of 20.86 seconds.
- Junior James Maniscalco (Fairfield, Conn.) won the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:39.08.
- Freshman Terrel Williams (Maplewood, N.J.) won the 110-meter hurdles, posting a time of 14.28 seconds.
- Sophomore Josiah Thompson (Jamaica, N.Y.) took second in the 100-meter dash and posted a new PR with a time of 10.57 seconds.
In the field…
- Junior Michael Jeffers (Clifton Park, N.Y.) earned his first win of the spring outdoor season in the javelin, posting a big PR with a throw of 66.26 meters. Classmate Colin Winkler (Barkhamsted, Conn.) took second place also post a new PR with a throw of 65.52m.
- The Huskies went 1-2 in the discus as well with seniors Todd Stueber (Toms River, N.J.) and Matthew Brady (Biddeford, Maine) taking the top two spots. Stueber won with a throw of 50.69 meters and Brady came in second at 46.69 meters.
- Stueber would come back in the shot put to also grab a win, recording a throw of 17.58 meters. Brady was second with a throw of 17.08 meters.
- UConn did it again in the hammer throw with junior Chris Keegan (West Hartford, Conn.) and senior Cameron Thompson going 1-2. Keegan came up with a throw of 60.92 meters while Thompson posted a throw of 58.75 meters, his best throw of this spring.
- Senior Daniel Claxton (Nesconset, N.Y.) won in the high jump for the third time this spring and posted his best jump this outdoor season at 2.14 meters.
- Senior Safir Scott (Greenwich, Conn.) set a new PR and won the long jump, coming up with a leap of 7.58 meters.
- Sophomore Travis Snyder (Saco, Maine) got his third win this spring in the pole vault and had his best height, setting a new PR at 5.22 meters. Junior Tyler Hrbek (Northvale, N.J.) took second and also set a new PR height at 5.12 meters.
