CAYCE, S.C. - The UConn women's tennis team was knocked out of the BIG EAST Championship tournament in the quarterfinals, falling to No. 4 seed St. John's, 4-0, on Friday afternoon at the Cayce Tennis & Fitness Center.
"We came up against a tough St. John's team today," stated Director of Tennis Glenn Marshall. "We had chances in doubles, with several match points at #3, and a very close loss at #1. In singles, we had some very close matches. Unfortunately the match is ended after 4 team points, The remaining matches being played had two of them in third set, and one other about to split sets. So, this was a battle all the way to the end."
The Huskies saw their streak of 11-straight matches winning the doubles point come to an end as the Red Storm grabbed wins at No. 1 and 2 to open the match. UConn's junior-freshman tandem of Julieanne Bou (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) and Leonie Hoppe (Munich, Germany) lost at No. 1 to Jessica Livianu and Najah Dawson, 6-4. The opening point was clinched at the No. 2 spot with Emile Haakansson and Kajsa Stegrell posting a 6-2 win over sophomores Doga Selen Takunyaci (Istanbul, Turkey) and Denise Lai (Setauket, N.Y.).
In singles Livianu won at No. 1 over UConn's Bou, 6-1 and 6-4. Stegrell won at No. 5 over Takunyaci, 6-2 and 6-3 and the match was clinched at No. 4 where Gabriela Tenorio beat Lai, 7-6 (5) and 6-1.
Hoppe was in the third set at No. 2 with Dawson, winning the first set 7-6 (4) and losing the second, 6-2. Freshman Aleksandra Karamyshev (Ashton, Md.) was tied at 2-2 in the third set with Camila Ordonez at No. 6. The both split the first two sets, winning 6-4.
"Our team should really be commended the way they have handled all of the challenges faced during this Covid year," said Marshall. "They did everything that was asked of them, and it gave us the opportunity to compete this entire spring. We had a great season with an 8-4 record before the tournament, and we return all of our starting players for next season. The future looks bright for next year, and we are excited for the next chapter."
