Huskies Wrap Busy Weekend as Mia Nahom Sets New School Record

STORRS, Conn. - The UConn women's track and field team sent athletes to three different meets this weekend in their final tune-up before they head into the championship portion of their schedule. The Huskies ran at the Virginia Grand Prix and also had athletes at the Torrin Lawrence Memorial at UGA and the Jack Maloney Invite at Southern Connecticut State.
The Huskies had eight PR performances including a new school record in the 3,000 meter steeplechase as they competed at three different meets over the weekend. Next up for UConn will be a return trip to the BIG EAST Championship on May 14 and 15 at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
"We came into the weekend to get the final touches in before we head into championship season," stated assistant track and field coach Lindsay Crevoiserat. "I love seeing personal bests all around and we have great momentum from everyone going into Big East!Â
"Both the men and women went into the races with a game plan in mind and for the most part we executed very well," commented Crevoiserat. "I'm proud of them today and I'm looking forward to starting the championship season."
At the Virginia Grand Prix
On the track…
- Senior Mia Nahom (New Milford, Conn.) ran the 3,000-meter steeplechase for the second time this spring and on Saturday night set a new school record in the event. Nahom's new PR, took nearly nine seconds off her time from late March to finish second in the race with a time of 10:10.76. She breaks the previous record of 10:11.57 set by Meg Cunningham in 2017.
- Classmate Danielle Jordan (Clifton Park, N.Y.) came in fourth in the race with a time of 10:24.45.
- In the 5,000 meters junior Randi Burr (Westerly, R.I.) had a great performance taking just over 11 seconds off her previous top-time, posting a new PR of 16:19.33 to finish fourth overall.
- In the 1500 a pair of Huskies set new PRs as freshman Jenna Zydanowicz (West Hartford, Conn.) turned in a time of 4:25.53 to take 10th. Â Â Senior Rachel Vick (Woolwich, N.J.) set a new PR with a time of 4:31.37.
At the Torrin Lawrence Memorial
On the track…
- Junior Shanelle Colmon (East Brunswick, N.J.) turned in her fastest time ever in the 200 meters, clocking in at 24.09 seconds for a new PR and a fifth-place finish.
- Freshman Brianna Davis (Bay Shore, N.Y.) also set a new PR in the 200 meters, clocking a 25.02 seconds time for 11th in the field.
In the field…
- Senior Taylor Woods (Marlboro, Md.) set a new PR in the long jump with a leap of 6.38 meters, good for a sixth-place finish.
- Freshman Jasmine Barrow (Athens, Ga.) was sixth in the triple jump and set a new PR with a leap of 12.27 meters.
- Junior Chanell Botsis (Coquitlam, British Columbia) took third in the hammer with a throw of 59.17 meters.
- Junior Emma Chee (Bainsbridge Island, Wash.) took fifth in the pole vault at 3.83 meters.
At Jack Maloney Invite
On the track…
- Four Huskies took the third through fifth spots in the 3,000 meters led by sophomore Caroline Webb (Greenwich, Conn.) who led the pack in second at 10:26.38. She was followed by junior Celia Chacko (Windsor, Conn.) in third (10:38.56), junior Alyssa Kraus (Fairfield, Conn.) in fourth (10:52.03) and junior Sarah Leatherwood (Fairfield, Conn.) in fifth (10:57.47).
- Freshman Jalah Cooper (Windsor, Conn.) was third in the 200 meters at 27.07 seconds.
- Senior Allie Alsup (Durham, Conn.) ran the 400 meters for the first time in her career and took third with a time of 1:00.63.
In the field…
- Freshman Kaitlyn Conte (Marlboro, N.Y.) took second place in the shot put at 11.67 meters and was also second in the hammer throw at 44.88 meters.
