STORRS, Conn. – The UConn (18-14, 10-5 BIG EAST) softball team dropped its series finale against St. John's (10-19, 7-14 BIG EAST), 6-2, Sunday afternoon at Burrill Family Field. After getting a pair of singles in the second off the bats of Briana Marcelino and Devon Casazza, Reese Guevarra blasted her third home run of the season over the right field wall in the bottom of the third inning to break the scoring drought for the Huskies. Aziah James followed with a single up the middle then freshman Jana Sanden knocked a double to center field. Barnett was next up to bat and took up real estate at first after getting hit by the pitch. James was brought in on Marcelino's RBI ground out, pulling UConn within 4-2.
St. John's added two more to its total in the top of the fifth and pushed its lead back to four. The Huskies attempted to put together a comeback with two more hits in the fifth and another in the sixth but were unable to push anyone across.
Payton Kinney (8-11) got the start in the circle for the Huskies and tossed three innings in addition to four strikeouts. Meghan O'Neil relieved Kinney and pitched the final four frames with a pair of K's against 17 batters.
The Huskies had an effective hitting day and logged eight hits on the afternoon, but left 12 runners onboard. Despite Sunday's outcome, the Huskies won the weekend series with the Red Storm, 2-1, its second-consecutive conference series victory. UConn has won five of its last six games, dating back to earlier this week at Providence.
