MASON, Ohio - The BIG EAST regular season champion UConn baseball team hauled in eight BIG EAST All-Conference honors while Kyler Fedko took home unanimous BIG EAST Player of the Year honors and Jim Penders and his coaching staff captured BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the year.
The surging Huskies, winner's of seven in a row, landed four players on both the BIG EAST First Team and Second Teams. Fedko, along with the rest of the UConn outfield consisting of Chris Winkel and Erik Stock plus closer Caleb Wurster earned First Team accolades.
The Second Team featured UConn starting pitchers Ben Casparius and Austin Peterson, first baseman/utility Reggie Crawford and catcher Pat Winkel.
The eight honorees led the conference with UConn gearing up to start the BIG EAST Championship on Thursday, May 27 against No. 4 seeded Xavier at 6:30 p.m. from Prasco Park.
Fedko entered the year as the Preseason Co-BIG EAST Player of the Year and started the first three weeks a little slow but when the Huskies traveled to Lubbock to take on Texas Tech, the UConn outfielder turned it on in a big way.
The Gibsonia, Pa. native becomes the first Husky to hit .400 after the end of the regular season since the 2001 season (Mike Scott, .413). He led the conference in AVG, hits, runs scored, total bases and on-base percentage.
Jim Penders and the UConn coaching staff take home its first coaching staff of the year honor since 2016. It is the fourth time the staff has been recognized by the BIG EAST with other awards coming in 2006, 2010 and 2011.
Despite playing 10 less regular season games due to Covid this season, the Huskies have won 30 or more games for the 14th time in Coach Penders 17 seasons with a full season (2020 cancelled due to Covid).
This will be the Huskies first BIG EAST Championship since defeating Notre Dame in 2013, as the No. 8 seed, to captured the conference crown and advance to the NCAA Blacksburg Regional.
