Six Huskies Garner ABCA All-Northeast Region

STORRS, Conn. - The UConn baseball team had six players earn ABCAÂ Northeast-All Region honors with three student-athletes landing on both the first and second teams.
Catcher Pat Winkel, starting pitcher Ben Casparius and outfielder Kyler Fedko grabbed first team All-Region, while first baseman Reggie Crawford, closer Caleb Wurster and designated hitter Kevin Ferrer secured second team honors.
UConn led the region with six players selected to the All-Region team. The Huskies finished the 2021 campaign by winning both the BIG EAST regular season and tournament championships and reached their third-straight NCAA Tournament.
Winkel was an All-BIG EAST Second Team member and hit .284 with 14 doubles, 11 home runs, 42 RBIs, 38 runs scored and threw out 13 base runners. He led the team with three-multi-homer games and contributed 17 multi-hit games and 13 multi-RBI games.Â
Casparius earned Second Team All-BIG EAST honors and pitched his way onto the  BIG EAST Championship All-Tournament team with a dazzling 7.0 shutout inning performance vs. Creighton. He finished second in UConn single-season history with 127 strikeouts and ranked No. 12 in the country in strikeouts. He led the Huskies and BIG EAST Conference in starts (15), wins (8), innings pitched (91.2) and strikeouts (127).
Fedko had one of the top seasons in UConn history and with it earned numerous awards including NCBWA District 2 Player of the Year, Collegiate Baseball Second Team All-American, BIG EAST Player of the Year, First Team All-BIG EAST and BIG EAST Championship Most Outstanding Player. The UConn outfielder the BIG EAST Conference and was 15th in the country with a .398 batting average, the highest for a Husky since Mike Scott hit .413 in 2001. He ranked 35th in the nation with 1.50 hits per game. The third year sophomore led the BIG EAST in runs scored (57), hits (78), on-base percentage (.483), total bases (132). He added 14 doubles, two triples, 12 home runs, 53 RBIs, 28 walks, stole seven bases and had team-high 24 multi-hit games and added 16 multi-RBI games.
Crawford was a Second Team All-BIG EAST performer in 2021. He started all 51 games that he played, mainly at first base. During the year he hit .295 with 11 doubles, one triple, 34 runs scored and slugged .543. Crawford led the BIG EAST and the Huskies with 13 home runs and 62 RBIs. His 62 RBIs were tied for fourth most in a UConn single-season and most since George Springer had 62 in 2010.Â
Wurster was a First Team All-Big East closer in 2021 and led the BIG EAST Conference with nine saves on the year. The left-hander appeared in 25 games out of the UConn pen, going 4-1 with a 2.41 ERA. The Coventry, R.I. native pitched 41.0 innings, recorded 52 strikeouts and held opponents to a .207 average against
Ferrer played in 35 games and started 30. He hit .275 with 33 hits including nine doubles, one triple, one home run, 20 RBIs and scored 17 runs.
