CHICAGO – Incoming UConn freshman guard Jordan Hawkins has been named the 2020-21 Gatorade Maryland Boys Basketball Player of the Year.
Hawkins, a 6-5, 170-pound senior guard from Gaithersburg, Md., averaged 19.7 points, 11.4 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 2.3 steals, 1.9 blocks and shot .636 overall and .464 from three-point range as he led perennial powerhouse DeMatha Catholic High School (Hyattsville, Md.) to an 11-0 record this past season.
The Gatorade award recognizes not only athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character both on and off the court. Hawkins has maintained a solid B average in the classroom and has volunteered locally as part of food drives to benefit the needy during the pandemic and he has donated his time to multiple community service initiatives through his school.
Gatorade annually recognizes a Player of the Year in each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Hawkins will now become a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Boys Basketball Player of the Year award to be announced in June. He also has the opportunity to award a $1,000 grant to a local or national youth sports organization of his choosing and he is eligible to submit a 30-second video explaining why that organization is deserving of one of twelve $10,000 spotlight grants, which will be announced throughout the year.
Hawkins, who is scheduled to arrive in Storrs this weekend to begin summer school and participate in the team's summer workouts, joins 6-2 guard Rahsool Diggins (Archbishop Wood High School), who was named the MaxPreps Pennsylvania Player of the Year, and 6-10 forward Samson Johnson (The Patrick School) in a UConn recruiting class that has been ranked in the Top 15 in the country.
