RICHMOND, Va. – UConn rising sophomore swimmer Niamh Hofland has been named an Honorable Mention Scholar All-American for the 2020-21 season by the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America.
Hofland's individual honor comes on the heels of both the UConn women's and men's swimming and diving teams earning Scholar All-America team honors from the CSCAA, which was announced last week.
To qualify for individual honors, the student-athlete must have earned a 3.5 grade point average or higher and achieved a "B" time standard for the national championship in her event.
"Niamh's selection as a Scholar All-American is well-deserved," said UConn swimming coach Chris Maiello. "She is an outstanding student-athlete and an even better person. Being a Scholar All-American has a special meaning to our program, in that it proves she is one of the very best at what she does. Her 3.75 GPA and her NCAA provisional qualifying performance in the 400 Individual Medley display her grit, commitment to excellence and an ability to overcome setbacks and obstacles. We are happy for her recognition and look forward to her future contributions to our program."
Hofland (Newport-Telford, Great Britain) burst on the scene as a freshman last season, making impressive contributions even during a shortened season. She finished the year by helping the UConn women's team take second place overall at the BIG EAST Championships, earning BIG EAST individual championships for herself in the 500-yard freestyle and the 1,650-yard freestyle.
The UConn women's and men's swimming and diving teams captured the academic honors with impressive team grade point averages of 3.59 for the women and 3.47 for the men during last semester.
