STORRS, Conn. – The UConn men's soccer team (1-1) looks to bounce back when they take on the Monmouth Hawks on Saturday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00pm at Morrone Stadium at the Rizza Family Sports Complex.
Last Time Out
The Huskies will look to get back to winning ways on Saturday night, after dropping a close game against URI last Friday night. UConn had plenty of offensive opportunities, including two direct free kicks taken by sophomore Moussa Wade, both of which hit the frame of the goal, but stayed out. Graduate student goalkeeper Jahmali Waite made three saves on the night while senior Dom Laws tallied a team-high four shots.
Scouting the Hawks
Monmouth enters Saturday's contest with a 2-0-1 record after tying Howard (3-3) in their season opener and then picking up back to back shutout wins against St. Francis Brooklyn (3-0) and Delaware (4-0). The Hawks have scored ten goals in their first three games of the season. Julian Gomez leads the team with three goals and two assists for eight points. Luke McBeth and Liam McGregor have each tallied two goals and an assist for five points. Seven other players have recorded a point this season, giving the Hawks a balanced attack up front.
Matchup History
Saturday's contest will be the fourth meeting between these two teams, with UConn holding a 2-0-1 overall record against Monmouth. The last meeting came in 2011, where the Huskies came out on top with a 2-1 win at Morrone Stadium. In 2009, the Huskies and Hawks met in the NCAA first round, where the teams were held scoreless, forcing a penalty shootout. Monmouth won that shootout 4-3 to advance in the tournament.
Up Next
It will be a quick turnaround for the Huskies as they face in-state rival Yale on Tuesday, September 14th in the final game of the opening four-game home stretch. Kickoff against the Bulldogs is slated for 7:00pm at Morrone Stadium at the Rizza Family Sports Complex.
