MSOC falls to no. 18 Xavier 1-0

CINCINNATI, OH – The UConn men's soccer team fell to the Xavier Musketeers 1-0 Saturday night at Corcoran Field. The Huskies drop to 2-5-1 on the season and 0-2-1 in BIG EAST play.
The Huskies had an early chance to take the lead in the 5th minute. Frantz Pierrot was able to get a shot off a loose ball in the Musketeers box, but the shot was partially blocked, and Xavier's goalkeeper was able to collect Pierrot's effort. Majority of the play in the next 20 minutes was played in the middle third of the field, with both teams in search of the game's first goal.
Xavier had their best chance of the half in the 26th minute, when the Huskies turned the ball over in their own third. UConn's goalkeeper Michael Stone came up with a big kick save to keep the game knotted at one.
Just two minutes later in the 28th minute, Mateo Leveque won a free kick just outside of the Musketeers box, but his effort on goal sailed just over the crossbar. The Huskies had another chance before the half in the 39thminute as Guillaume Vacter played a ball over the top to Scott Testori but his effort was wide of the Musketeers goal. The first half finished at a deadlock with the Huskies outshooting the Musketeers 3-2.
UConn came out strong in the second half creating multiple chances in Xavier's final third. Kai Griese had a chance on goal in the 51st minute. Leveque swung in a corner kick that was headed right to a wide open Griese at the top of the box but his effort on goal was blocked. In the 60th minute the Huskies had a chance off a counterattack. Jayden Reid whipped in a cross to Eli Conway, but he could not get a clean shot off on the Musketeers goalkeeper.
Xavier scored the game's only goal in the 61st minute off a cross. UConn turned up the pressure after the goal, dominating in possession. In the 66th minute Okem Chime had a shot on goal but once again the Musketeers goalkeeper was able to make a great save. The Huskies fought until the final whistle but could not find an equalizer.

UConn will host Providence on Wednesday, October 5th at Morrone Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:00pm.
