JAMAICA, New York – The UConn men's soccer team settled for a scoreless draw against the St. John's Red Storm Saturday night at Belson Stadium. The game was a defensive battle from start to finish as the Huskies were limited to only ten shots, their lowest total in a conference game since October 5th.
UConn was dominant in the first half limiting St. John's to only one shot in the first 45 minutes. Nicolas Tomerius had the first shot of the game in the 3rd minute off a counterattack as Kai Griese found Tomerius on the right flank, but his shot was high and wide of the goal. Soren Ilsoe had the Huskies first shot on goal in the 21st minute from just outside of the box but his shot was straight at the goalkeeper.
UConn had a flurry of chances to score in the final 15 minutes of the first half. In the 30th minute Tomerius had another chance off a counterattack down the right flank, but his shot was just wide of the goal. Tomerius would create another chance for the Huskies just four minutes later as he crossed a ball right to classmate Eli Conway at the top of the box. Conway played a nice layoff to an open Mateo Leveque, but his shot was parried out for a corner kick by the St. John's goalkeeper. Off the corner kick Frantz Pierrot had an acrobatic chance right in front of goal as a bouncing ball found its way to the graduate transfer. Pierrot made a great effort to scissor kick the bouncing ball, but his effort was just wide of the goal. The Huskies finished the first half with six shots.
The second half was played mostly in the middle third of the field as both teams searched for an opening goal. Defender Guillaume Vacter had a game saving deflection in the 59th minute as St. John's had a breakaway chance on goal but the sophomore captain chased down the Red Storm forward and deflected his shot away from the Huskies goal.
In the 79th minute St. John's put the ball in the back of the net but the goal scorer was ruled offside by the assistant referee to keep the game scoreless. UConn had their best chance of the second half in the 82nd minute as Jayden Reid served a perfect cross right to the head of Scott Testori but his header was right into the goalkeeper's hands. The Huskies outshot St. John's 10-6 with shots on goal being 4-1 in favor of UConn.
The Huskies move to 7-6-3 and 3-3-3 in conference play. UConn is currently sitting in sixth place in the BIG EAST standings with 12 points going into the final week of the regular season.
