HAMPDEN, Mass. – UConn grad student Jared Nelson continued his outstanding start to the 2022-23 season with his third consecutive Top Two finish, capturing the runner-up spot at the 2022 UConn Invitational at GreatHorse.
Nelson (Rutland, Vt.) fired a 2-under par 70 during Tuesday's final round of the tourney to finish with a 1-under, 76-69-70=215, his second straight runner-up finish, following his individual victory at the season-opening Doc Gimmler Invitational.
Rhode Island redshirt senior Brandon Gillis was the individual medalist of the event, shooting a tournament record 8-under, 71-68-69=208, to top the 78-player field.
Nelson tied with Gillis for the tournament lead in birdies with 13. For the UConn grad student, the tourney included his seventh sub-70 round of the season and the 17th of his college career. He has 44 career rounds of par or better. It marked his 16th Top 10 finish.
Nelson led the Huskies to a fourth-place finish in the 14-team field with a 28-over, 304-297-291=892, one stroke out of third place. St. John's won the team championship with a 21-over 885, with Seton Hall second with a 25-over 889, and Rhode Island third with a 27-over 891.
UConn sophomore Trevor Lopez (Winchester, Mass.) had the second Top 10 finish of his career, tying for eighth place with a 6-over, 73-73-76-222. Lopez's other Top 10 finish was in fourth place in last year's UConn Invitational.
Also for UConn, junior Jimmy Paradise (Tampa, Fla.) finished in a tie for 22nd place with a 10-over, 80-72-74=226, including his 10th career round of par of better. Sophomore Eric Boulger (Walpole, Mass.) tied for 37th place, the best finish of his career, with a 15-over, 76-83-72=231, including his second round of par or better and freshman Colin Spencer (Mashpee, Mass.) tied for 64th place with a 24-over, 79-86-75=240.
The Huskies also had five playing competing as individuals, led by junior Tommy Dallahan (Simsbury, Conn.), who finished in a tie for 15th place with an 8-over, 73-80-71=224, including his 18th career round of par or better.
Freshman Connor Goode (Glastonbury, Conn.) had his best finish, tying for 27th place with a 12-over, 74-78-76=228, senior Logan Broyles (Mendon, Vt.) finished in a tie for 44th place with a 17-over, 74-78-81=233, while sophomore Vikram Konanki (Newton, Mass.) and freshman Christopher Sacher (Schoeffengrund, Hesse, Germany) tied for 46th place with an 18-over, 82-75-77=234 and 18-over 81-76-77=234, respectively.
UConn continues its season on Oct. 9-11, competing in The Carolina Cup, at Carolina Country Club in Spartanburg, S.C.
