STORRS, Conn. – The UConn men's soccer team lost to the Seton Hall Pirates 1-0 Saturday night at Morrone Stadium. The match was very physical as six yellow cards were given including a straight red card to UConn's Scott Testori for a late challenge on a Pirates player.
UConn had two early chances in the first five minutes of the game. Mateo Leveque had an opportunity on goal in the 2nd minute, but his shot went just wide of the post. Just one minute later, Guillaume Vacter had a header off a corner that was saved by the Pirates goalkeeper.
The Huskies had one of their best chances of the night in the 20th minute. Freshman midfielder Nicolas Tomerius had a curling shot that was bound for the top corner of the goal, but the Pirates goalkeeper made an incredible save to keep the game tied at zero. UConn went on to dominate in possession for the final 25 minutes of the half.
In the 37th minute Leveque was able to put the ball in the back of the net but was ruled offside by the assistant referee. The half ended scoreless with UConn outshooting the Pirates 6-1.
The first ten minutes of the second half were played mostly in the midfield with both teams searching for an opening goal. In the 58th minute Frantz Pierrot had a chance in front of goal, but his shot was just off target going into the side netting. Pierrot had another chance just a minute later in front of goal, but he could not get on the end of Leveque's ball across the face of goal. The Pirates broke the deadlock in the 70th minute to take a 1-0 lead.
The Huskies threw everything they had at Seton Hall in the final 20 minutes as UConn played down a man for the final 16 minutes of the game after the Testori red card. Pierrot had one final chance on goal in the 79thminute but his shot was just wide of the post. The Huskies fought until the final whistle but could not find an equalizer.
