STORRS, Conn. – The UConn men's basketball team has completed three home-and-home season series in the BIG EAST Conference and swept all three.
Now the Huskies will try to stop them same thing from happening to them.
The No. 24/24 Huskies (17-7 overall, 8-5 BIG EAST) lost a tough 90-87 game in overtime the first time they played Seton Hall this season at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. The Pirates (15-8, 6-7) return the trip Wednesday night at Gampel Pavilion (8:30 p.m., CBS Sports Network).
UConn and Seton Hall have a long history, dating back to 1917 and spanning 66 games with UConn holding a 45-21 advantage. UConn has won three of the last five.
The Huskies are tied for third place with Creighton in the tightly-bunched BIG EAST standings, while Seton Hall is in seventh place and looking to move up to improve its NCAA Tournament resume.
The Huskies, coming off a hard-fought 63-60 win over St. John's on Sunday at Madison Square Garden, are led by grad student guard R.J. Cole, who tops the Huskies in scoring (16.2) and assists (4.5). Sophomore Adama Sanogo is second in scoring (14.9) and leads the team in rebounding (8.2), while senior Tyrese Martin is also a double-figure scorer (13.9). The rest of the usual starting lineup includes grad student Isaiah Whaley (7.5 ppg, 5.0 rpg) and sophomore Andre Jackson (7.0 ppg, 7.6 rpg), who grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds in Sunday's win.
Seton Hall was on a three-game winning streak before dropping a 73-67 decision at Villanova last Saturday. The Pirates are led by senior guard Jared Rhoden (15.4 ppg) and grad guard Bryce Aiken (14.5), although Aiken has missed the Pirates last seven games with a concussion. Sophomore guard Kadary Richmond (8.9 ppg) led the Pirates' earlier win over UConn with a career-high 27 points.
UConn is 10-2 at home this season, but a perfect 5-0 at Gampel Pavilion. Seton Hall is 4-4 on the road. The game is the first of three consecutive home games for the Huskies.
